VPN needed?

    Hi folks,

Have Hotspot Shield VPN installed on my MBP, iPhone and iPad (just back from travelling).

I was wondering however...do I actually need them at home? For example - do I need it on my on when home wifi (WPA2 secured) or my iPad (wifi only - which only connects to home wifi) Or do I even need it on my iPhone at all? (O2 network)?

Is it only required really when connecting to a public wifi?

    You're advice is much appreciated!

    MBP?

    Edit: Ah, MacBook Pro.

On your home wifi, e.g. a wifi network you trust, you should be grand without it. When on a wifi network you don't trust, you should use it.

While I would advise you use it on all public wifi networks, just because a network is closed, does not automatically mean it is safe. It is trivial to set up what appears to be a closed, secure wireless network, call it Subway, put up a page that says "Ask at the counter for a code for internet access", with the Subway logo, and on submitting said code, provide Internet access, which is in fact sniffing all your web traffic.

If I were you I would get into the habit of using it everywhere you go, and if its too much hassle to turn it off while at home, then just leave it on all the time.

Cheers! Is there any need for it on my iPhone do you think?

Noticed a bit of battery drain cause of it...

What happens if you connect to a wireless network when out and about?

Apologies - I have it on my phone but deactivated - would only turn it on on a public wifi.

Would it be required on 3G?

Not needed really on 3G, depends on how much you trust your mobile provider I guess ;)
