I was wondering (hopefully) if anyone has had any experience around this.

My Father, who was diagnosed with Motor neuron Disease about 6 months ago, is planning on going away to the Canaries next month. He tried to get insured with his usual Travel Insurance company but they will not insure him due to his pre existing condition.

Does anyone have any ideas / suggestions around how to go about getting him insured?

I have a feeling it must be possible even if a bit more expensive than usual but I've been searching but most of the info I can locate applies to residents of the UK so nothing local.

Ring the Irish MND society, they are very helpful.

As far as I know VHI travel insurance cover pre-existing illness but you might have to be a member. Give them a call.

This UK company may be your best bet. They cover Irish residents too.

I have MS and used this company for a single trip policy. It was only €13 which I thought was great. There is a drop down list for country of residence so just choose Ireland.

I have cover for in-patient hospital treatment on my VHI policy but I was looking for cover to get me home if anything happened so bought the additional travel insurance. Just in case.

Hope he can get a reasonable quote.

Thanks for the responses all, the Few I managed to get to talk to me (including VHI) required that he had 55k Private European health insurance, his only covers him in Ireland.

I just went and tried a quote with allcleartravel.co.uk and they came back with a figure! thanks @chillywilly. Its a high number (over £250 for single trip) but will be worth it if it works out.

AllClearTravel want £ 610.74 for pre-existing Gall stone induced pancreatitis :(
Insureandgo offered a really low price but then stopped offering the quote online and wont honour it on the phone :(
    Any ideas?
