Posting a smartphone into Ireland from the US

    Hi all,

    My sister is just about to finish up a J1 in the US. She recently told me she bought me a new smartphone as a gift, but it hasn't arrived at her accommodation before she leaves and she's now wondering what to do.

    She has a friend who is staying on for a while after her and can carry it back in her luggage, or she can post it to Ireland as soon as it arrives.

    I know nothing about any of this stuff, so I'm basically just wondering;

    Is it a good idea to post it?
    Which end will taxes need to be paid on?
    Which taxes apply to gifts?

    Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
