Bringing written references to interview

A company I'm interviewing with later in the week have asked that I bring written references with me to leave with the interviewers. Whilst I scramble around to get these written references....is it practice for these to be in lieu of other references that would usually be checked after an offer of employment is made? It's a long time since I was asked to provide a written reference at interview stage so I'm not sure if it's the same two references I would have given after interview that should be used at this stage? Thanks.

If you are bringing them then only bring photo copies as it would be unhelpful to have to repeatedly ask for referees to rewrite them.

It's certainly unusual unless you are practically guaranteed to get the job.
