G4 MDD mac dying...dead?

this isn't a big deal, as it's an old machine, and i've got lots of use out of it. i feel it doesn't owe me anything.....but i would like to know what's wrong with it. i can't emotionally let it go & throw it out. it's too beautiful :P

it's a 2003 G4 power mac MDD 1ghz single processor. ram maxed out. running 10.4.11.

never really had any problems with that machine. in july, i started using it more often. it would freeze, or kernel panic the odd time, requiring me to hard restart it.

then sometimes when i power on the machine, the screen stays black and the fan comes on very loud. (the fan down the bottom, underneath the cd drives)

the only thing you can do is hard restart with power button. it would only happen the odd time, but now it happens all the time, and i can't get the machine to boot.

while it was still running i ...
    • reset the pram
    • ran disk utility to repair disk & permissions
    • ran apple hardware test (extended test) no problems came up
    • pressed the reset button on the motherboard (i can't remember the name of it)
    • tested the voltage on the little battery, which still reads 3.6v
    • cleaned machine out with an air duster
    • taken out, cleaned contacts & re-seat RAM & video card

i have read it could be a,b,c,d,e,f,g......z.... but none makes sense.

    1. motherboard battery (not that, cos i tested it)
    2. hard disk failure (don't think so, cos i don't hear any clicking noises)
    3. bad ram .. dunno?
    4. CPU failure ... dunno?
    5. have also read it could be the psu failure

but still???? i have no idea. if the hardware test says it's grand, i dunno what it is.. something definitely wrong with the mac.

so then i did a little more testing:

    1. left it off and unplugged overnight. still would not boot, and got loud fan noise
    2. took out belkn USB card. still no boot, and loud fan.
    3. took video card out. still no boot and loud fan.
    4. put video back in, took the stick of ram closest to video card out. still no boot and loud fan
    5. took out the second stick of ram, so only have two left. got the chime, but no video & no loud fan.
    6. put the ram back in (both pieces). no chime, no boot, no video, and loud fan.

now i am even more confused!

other notes: the red light is on the motherboard, so power is getting to the motherboard.

if the mac is hardware dead somewhere, why did the hardware test not show something up?

any ideas, or more tests i could do?

    thanks :)

Can you boot off the disk?

i could up until last night. i am not sure if i could now, seeing as i have no chime to time for when to press the c key. no video at all, no chime. just the really loud fans after about 10 seconds.

You can't even see the grey screen? Tell me this, My memory is a bit shot on this one.

The power mac had removable VGA Cards? Did you try reseating that and the memory too? - scrap that - reread your post

Take out the memory altogether and see if the mac beeps - it should beep 3 times regardless if there no memory in the slots. - wanna see if you've a dodge logic board..

no grey screen. video doesn't even come on. and as per above, i removed and reseated all RAM & VGA cards. i even tried booting up without the graphics card, and also by removing RAM sticks.

edit, i see your edit :p i'll try and take all the sticks out now & count beeps

took all the ram out. no beeps! :(
just the loud fan after ten seconds

That's bizarre - The Mac should beep due to no ram in the slots....

Could very well be down to the PSU so.. or a fooked Logic board.

    Got any more spare parts?

no spares. i think it's logic or psu also. i saw an MDD for sale on adverts, but the guy won't reply... gahh!

    Dirty

I'm dumping a load of equipment tomorrow with Camara, I found a pretty clean looking MDD G4, if you're in Dublin 2/4 you can take it away if you wish.
