Bike making noise when out of saddle ?

    Hi,

I had some trouble back in June with my Cannondale Super Six 105 Carbon 2012 bike. When out of the saddle either sprinting or going up a hill the bike starts making a clicking noise when I finish a pedal stroke on either foot.

I brought the bike to the LBS back in June to try and identify what was causing the problem but he just put lube on the bottom bracket (or somwhere near it) and I had no noise since.

Just last week I replaced the chain and cassette. After 8,000 km they were stretched and worn. The clicking noise just started up today so I wondering what is it ? The bike is looked after.

Do you think I just need to ask for lube or is there a part acting up ?

Thanks for the URL. I did spend a while surfing trying to identify what it is. I think its something internal in the bottom bracket.

Not sure if it's anything similar, but I've noticed that in certain gears, or under certain effort (i.e. when the frame might deflect slightly) that my chain may catch slightly on one of the rivets on the large chainring, and cause this sort of clicking on each revolution. Have you been able to narrow down any circumstances in which this does or doesn't happen for you, other than out of the saddle?

Of course if this happens in the big ring for you, then that rules out this potential cause!

When I am cycling along in most gears in the saddle there is very little noise. There is some noise with the chain and chainset friction but I am unsure about it and its not that noisey.

The major problem is only when I get out of the saddle. I use the big gear on the front and a combination (from small to big) gears at the back. Once I start putting my body weight on the pedal I get the regular clicking noise. Its quite noticeable. It sounds a bit plastic. Its not the pedals but I do think its the bottom bracket as there is no other moving part.

When you stand on the pedals you also pull/push the handlebars and generally stress the frame and drivetrain. Therefore it could be a number of things - headset, rear freehub.

All creaks sound like they come the bottom bracket. It's some sort of divine spite.

From my experience - I think it could be the bearings in the Rear Hub. I don't think they would have been replaced as part of the Cassette change.

I checked the headset and its tight. There is no play in it. There is no real noise coming from the back of the bike. Its near the pedals. I only got the cassette and chain replaced. No other part was changed.

Under examination there is nothing wrong with the bike but that's without taking it apart.

had this problem as well not long ago and aftger exhausting all usual suspects (pedals, headset, strem, bars,bb) it turned out that a had a small bit of play on the front freehub and a quick trip to my lbs soon sorted it out.

Is the rear QUick Release tight? Release the lever, turn the adj. nut on the other side about one quarter tighter and try that.

Yes its very tight, I took it apart like said but it doesn't make sense to tighten it. I tightened it as much as it would allow without the thread sticking out. I don't think there anything wrong with the rear of the bike.

It may well be the front free hub.

I had the same problem on Ridley compact, it was driving me nuts and no amount of tightening, oiling, adjusting or cleaning would get rid of it. I checked absolutely everything from BB, pedals, cranks, front & rear derailleurs, brakes, to seat post etc etc and couldnt sort it so just figured it was something id have to live with and ignored it.

After living with it for nearly 4 or 5 months, I was taking the bike in the car and removed front and rear wheels and after refitting them the clicking was gone. I had the front wheel off regularly but that was the first time in a year i've had to remove the rear wheel and so i'm guessing that maybe it wasnt properly seated/centred or something like that although i cant be sure. Maybe just remove the wheel and refit it and ensure that its 100% centred and seated properly/completely in the rear drop out (it'll only take a minute to do)

I did just that. I will take it for a spin before I head down to the LBS. It really could be anything.

Do you get the noise when you use the small ring on the front?

I had a problem like this before with my bike, any time I put any effort in it squealed. Checked everything and couldn't find anything wrong, so I sprayed every thread/opening etc with GT85 and that sorted it.
