Shipping from Hong Kong

Mods please move if in inappropriate location. Technically this isn't about online buying but it is about shipping from Hong Kong.
My aunt and her husband are on holidays in Hong Kong at the moment. She is getting some tailored suits made up for me and some clothes tailored for my children too...which are in the process of being made.
I got an email from my aunt this evening asking what the best way to send them to me is, as their luggage won't fit them! I have no idea.
She is marking them as "gift", which is appropriate as she is the one paying for them...I presume this wont cause an issue with customs etc?
If they come by standard post is it going to cause me a problem with them being diverted via customs..like how am I supposed to prove they came from my aunt?...she is only there on holidays and has no permanent address there..just a hotel room for the next 3 days!
Any advice most welcome. Thanks so much.

If it's above €22, from anyone, it's liable for VAT and if above €150 liable for duty, plus a handling charge.

Didn't know this. Even if its a present from someone I (the recipient) am liable for the duty? Might try convince them to squish it into the luggage!

The best thing for her to do is Detail them as shop seconds and value them for something realistic like €60 otherwise they will look for receipts from you which may be difficult to get hold off. You'll get charged vat on them but it'll be around €15 which isn't extortionate.

Ok thanks. I'll tell her this. I take it customs still open packages marked 'gift' as it doesn't matter if its a gift or not so it's irrelevant whether she writes this or not on the package?

I have been googling and I could get her to use a service called ems and also DHL couriers could send it. Would this solve my problems if I got her to use a service like this instead of normal mail? Thanks

If you use DHL you will almost certainly get charged vat plus administration fee. Note that DHL may not request payment on delivery, but you'll get a bill a few weeks later.

Less chance with EMS, as it's delivered by An Post, but still possible to get the import charges if i goes for customs exam.

Thanks. She can fit one suit in her case but she is going to post the rest via ems. Hopefully it all goes smoothly! Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Genuine gifts (like yours) have the VAT limit raised to €45 from €22.

Childrens clothes are zero VAT, adults are normal 23%, so if she is carrying anything make sure its adult clothes.

If you do get charged make sure the childrens are excluded from VAT. Note I am saying VAT, I am not sure of duty.
