Is there some sort of animal orphanage in the city I can give the cat to?

Your nearest Chinese restaurant should sort you out.

How old is the cat and is it male or female.
You can try the 'dogs home' at http://cspca.ie/
    021 4515535 or call in 10:00am – 1.00pm and 2.00pm – 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

Is it definitely not an option to take the cat? Can you find a house that will accept cats? You should speak to your new landlord and offer to pay a bigger deposit as "cat insurance".

There are shelters and things, but most if not all of them are completely over-subscribed. Very few people will adopt an adult cat, so if you abandon your cat, chances are you're effectively ending its life because it will be put down.

There's a rehoming thread for pets on the animal and power issues forum you could try. Also get onto the local rescues on facebook and they'll most likely share a photo and info of the cat if they're not in the position to take in the cat themselves... Same goes for local vets, I follow a few and they often post animals looking for homes.

I've paid pet deposits before and landlords changed their mind.

It not fair on pets or animal shelters to take on pets if you cannot provide a home for the life of the pet.

Try a goldfish next time you need a pet !

Please, no personal offence intended. My remarks are in general to anybody with pets.

Stay well clear of the dogs home, too many horrific stories to come out of that place, they were exposed years ago by a news paper which prompted the Animal care society to start up.
    http://www.catactiontrust.com/
    or
    http://www.animalcaresociety.ie/
should be able to sort out the OP.
