Help! Suggestions for Mother of the Groom outfit

    Hi everyone,

Just seeking some advice for my mom who is looking for an outfit for her sons wedding in early November. She wants to stay away from typical mother of bride/groom outfits, ie the taffeta, brocade style. She is a size 18/20 and late 60's, and feels this style doesn't suit her. She also wants to be able to wear the outfit again.

Any suggestions would be welcome as to what styles/outfits/brands etc other people have gone for, even any shop suggestions anywhere in the country would be great too.

She's getting anxious as she has no idea what to look for so any help would be fantastic!

    Thanks, foodie86 :-)

One of my neighbours had the same dilemma last year, she went for an Ann Balon dress and jacket, they're a bit more relaxed than most of the typical 'mother of the bride/groom' outfits and most of the bits could be worn again as separates.

la creme in gorey is a fab spot, it has some of its stuff on its website but i know several mothers of bride/groom who got kitted out there, they will also alter to fit so its perfect. ruby rouge is also next door and they stock FeeG which is popular too. satina in tramore is also well known for stocking outfits that bit different.

A second vote for FeeG, really gorgeous pieces.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'm definitely thinking of travelling to Tramore to have a look for myself, the shop looks great!

Mom tried on an Ann Balon dress last week but the lace wouldn't be her style at all and while the Fee G dressed are great, again they wouldn't be her style. She thinks they're a bit too young and not very flattering for her shape.

The search is still continuing! She is thinking of wearing a black dress however most shop assistants are appalled by this!

We are still undecided it could look v smart if dressed up with a jacket. And it's something she could wear again.

If anyone has seen mother of bride/groom wearing black please let me know as its such a big decision to make and we obv don't want her to look ridiculous.

    Thanks, foodie :-)

Don't let her wear black! She's probably used to hiding behind it. She going to be in lots of pictures and no amount of black will cloak her favourably.
I've seen a jacket/top similar to this work wonders on the larger lady, very flattering http://www.mcelhinneysbridalrooms.com/ronald-joyce-98842/roj98842pd.html. I'd recommend McElhinnys and The Village Shop in Raheny.

MadamX thanks for the Raheny recommendation ill check it out. The dress you linked is way too mother of groom for her! Definitely a no no as she would never wear it again. The colour was good just wrong fabric type.

She doesn't wear black very often actually just, skirts with a coloured blouse/cami. Hence the reluctance to go for full on MOG outfit. She's very practical and won't buy unless she can wear it again to mass etc - very old school lady I am dealing with.

Another weekend of browsing ahead I think.

I wonder would she hire an outfit just for the wedding Foodie? Might appeal to her practical side not to have to find something she could wear again!
