Despite their ferocious looks pike are fairly delicate creatures and anglers who target them tend to take a lot of care for their well-being, as quite rightly should be the case with all catch and release.

Big pike are scarce and a specimen could be 15 or more years old. Shame to mistreat it really.

Jimmy, I dont know why you complain about other people moaning as you have done plenty of moaning yourself on on threads, especially the one on the possible introduction of an angler registration charge.
Why shouldnt people on a pike angler message board be encouraging anglers to handle and return pike carefully ? Almost all pike anglers are strictly catch and release anglers trying to protect our sport for future generations. You mention 3 hooks. The pike Fed do not allow 3 hooks to be used for deadbaits etc in competitions.
I note that you are a game angler. Do you safely handle and return your catch or does it meet a priest and end up in a bag ?

do not worry.i respect trout and pike alike..all i am saying is that keeping an odd one of either species is no harm, especially pike,as they will never be wiped out.I might keep 5 r 6 in a year from different water systems.

In fairness most of the lads on it are probably only saying what they think people want to hear.
Half probably just chin a pike out of water and use barbed hooks with a pliers instead of forceps.

WOW!! So someone comes on a fishing forum moaning about people on another fishing forum moaning, HOLD THE FRONT PAGE!!!
Generally speaking all pike are returned unharmed, witnessed by the fact that many pike are caught on numerous occasions and over a span of years. Have a look at some of the fishing mags, there you'll see some beautiful pictures of some beautiful fish, pike, trout, salmon and sea trout. Dya see those moaning pikers carefully cradling their live catches to be soon-after released and do you see the trout, salmon and sea trout ( whose numbers are diminishing) anglers posing with their gill-tied dead catches?

demanufactured: pass the popcorn please. ;)

i made my points and i stand over them..i fish mainly for trout when i am home, and a small bit of coarse and pike also.i respect the fish, but i personally think that anglers spend too much time on forums and not enough time on the river bank(thats why i an writing here also) i have enough said . i will leave it to the experts on this site and other sites to say what is right or wrong.

We would all prefer to be on the bank than on forums, but if your like myself, I hardly get time to go fishing any more. There will always be whingers on every forum that "know best" and have no problem publicly pointing out other peoples mistakes. On the other hand, I have learned a huge amount from fishing with people I directly met on the Irish angling forums. In fact, my coarse fishing knowledge has probably doubled in the last 18 months since I started fishing with them.

as for the pink markers, you cant blame people for over reacting with the amount of poaching and littering that has happened over the last few years. We have a lot of water, and not enough people to keep an eye on it all.

yes.i do not see as much fishery staff as i did before.maybe they will recruit more in the near future.i know that almost all the staff in the midlands are fisheries development staff( stream habitat work, and building fishing stands etc).this work no longer takes place.maybe they could reallocate the role of bailiff to these people.i think there are only 2 fishery officers in the midlands. one in mullingar and one in the roscommon area. i never see them in the dublin area-EVER!
