DIY service savings?

2007 Skoda Ovtavtia, coming up to 120,000 miles. Last service included fuel filter. Skoda main dealers are offering a summer service for 129. I presume that's an oil and filter change, air filter, and a look around the car.

The other option is to do the oil and filters myself.
    • 5L of Mobil Oil - About €42 (special offer and axa discount card)
    • Oil Filter - Fiver online. Probably 10 locally
    • Air Filter - 10 online. 10 -20
    • Pollen Filter - 10

So 70-80 for parts. I have an oil filter wrench and drip pan etc. Socket set. Axle stands and a trolley jack. Dispose of oil in the local recycling centre.

I have other work I want done on the car. The turbo is sticking and the cruise control isn't working, but I reckon if I get the easy stuff out of the way, the garage won't have to have my car for so long!

I presume it's a 1.9 tdi? What spec oil is that for €42?

I am pretty sure the Skoda Summer service includes oil and filter and cabin filter plus the usual inspection etc. it doesn't include the air filter to the best of my knowledge.

The other thing to take into account is that a service doesn't just mean changing fluids and filters, so a DIY fluid and filters "service" and a full inspection service carried out by a competent mechanic are not the same thing at all.

I'd ring them and ask exactly what is included in their 'summer service'........what some garages main dealer or not try to pass of as a 'service' is truly shocking.

It's the 2 L diesel, the vrs model. The oil I was going to get is Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30

Think I'll get the oil for top ups anyway.

I meant to mention, I do have to get my turbo looked at by the garage anyway. I'm getting in intermittent issue with my turbo. Both over and underboost conditions! My regular guy reckons it is a sticky wastegate, which might be fixable by opening up the turbo and cleaning it.

Whenever I drop in a car for a service and other things, the other things never seem to get done on the day! This way, it goes in for the other thing. That's the plan anyway.

Might try a different independent garage closer to work. I'm not confident about brakes or identifying other issues I wouldn't be aware of.

Cheapest on micksgarage was a tenner, most expensive was 25 for an activated carbon one.

If you're competent and can read into things like oil condition and spark plug condition when they are removed then I'd agree. I've seen too many sheds lately that were serviced at home

I do my own oil/filters etc services and it's cheaper but tbh I started doing them so I wouldn't have to give the car to a mechanic for hours when I could do it myself outside the house in 20 mins. From there I moved on to almost anything I can do without a proper car lift, all by learning from youtube, google and trail and error.

Not sure about the turbo OP but you could prossibly have a go at the cruise control yourself too. Google "2007 skoda octavia cruise control fault" and similar.
