Question about Facebook

How come sometimes when you receive a message from somebody on facebook, you get an email.. but sometimes(rarely) you don't. Isn't this bizarre??

And more importantly: usually when you send someone a message, it says "seen at ...", but sometimes days might go by and it still doesn't show up as seen! Do they have a way around this? The only thing I can think of is that they might delete the message before seeing this???

Not really bizarre when you think there are millions of people on Facebook. Thats millions of automated e-mails telling people they have rcieved a message, won't work all the time.

And when somebody "sees" your message it usually means they are online but could have chat off?? Or they might have a messenger app downloaded?

You could always try the FAQ page on Facebook to find out or e-mail their support team if it is really bothering you :)

A message is only marked as seen when the person has focused on the chat box (i.e. either clicked on it or the textbox is already in focus).

There are 17 billion FB users and it takes Mark Zuckerburg quite a while to read each message sent and then email the other person to tell then they got a message sometimes he just doesn't bother as it takes too long. Same goes for the 'message seen at' notice, he has to keep track on all message and writes down who they were sent from and what time they were read at, then he has to go to the senders page and update the status as 'message seen at.....' I don't honestly know how he does it or where he gets the time, he surely must have people helping him but I have heard he does all himself because he's such a fucking control freak.

Sometimes I dont want to reply to someone so I won't go into the message so they won't get the "seen" notification.

I have emails disabled, no need for them when you get notifications straight to your phone.

Facebook now send only emails to notify you of a friend's birthday

You can change all your settings on facebook about what they send you emails about

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

You can get browser add-ons that block the 'seen' thing.

@OP, I'm curious, if you have a question about boards.ie do you ask on Facebook?

From my experience it seems to be that if I don't read a message within 30 minutes of it being sent, I then receive an e-mail for it.

    Very demanding ain't it?

Facebook can be glitchy and inconsistent. I only get emails now if someone tags me. It doesn't bother me though, no need for an email notification for every Facebook interaction.

He couldn't have built up a mammoth company like Facebook without being one, in fairness.

I poked my friend, but now I can't poke him again because he hasn't poked me back.

I want my money back.

Bad idea. Every single one of them is malware. Don't fall for it.
