hi myslef and my wife are thinking about putting our son in some sort of school we had him in a crech although they called it a school but overtime we were not pleased with the care provided and the expense of it. he wasnt learning anything like i said it was just get em in and take the money type of place typical franchise i guess. just that my wife is foreign and im not too ofey on the whole school thing.
is he too young for proper school? do we have to put his name down for next year etc?

any advice would be much appreciated.

    thanks.

He is far too young yet. Even at four and a half I would be of the opinion that he would still be too young. Boys tend find starting that bit tougher, ie the separation from mammy and daddy so waiting until he is five would be best. Is he in a crèche or a Montessori?

My daughter starts school next week, she is 5 and that is the average age for children to start school. But her cousin is 4 and a half and she is starting too.

Sounds like you would need a good Montessori for another year before school?

hi ian87 thanks for your reply. we had him in a creche for 5 months but since then ive lost my job and we had to take him out of it.
we cant afford even to pay for 3 days per week. we had him in there really just to mix with some kids as we live in an apt block which isnt much fun for him.
i guess we will just wait until hes 5 to put him in junior infants. im not a fan of creches etc.

    thanks again

Check with playschools/preschools in your area. He will qualify for the ECCE scheme.

It's a free year of preschool before starting junior infants.

    Google preschools in your area.

thankyou to all who replied much appreciated.

ok so a pre school who accepts the ECCE scehme is the road i should go down. the crech montessori he was in said that he was too young to be eligble for that scheme and when he does become of age i would have to pay half of the fee.
anyways im living in d.11 if anyone can recommend a school that accepts the ECCE scheme.

    thankyou again folks.

It's not a free year of childcare! He will be entitled to 3 hours, I think, a day. So if you need him to be there for longer you will have to pay the difference. But a preschool will normally only run for the morning anyway. If he was in a creche, and you needed him to be there for the full day, that is where paying the difference comes into it.

There is a cut off date for their age, but my daughter is a June baby and she qualified for it in the September after she turned 3.

There is a preschool in Glenhill in Finglas that I know of. And there are many others around the area too. Are there any neighbours with kids you can talk to, to ask advice?

A lot of the pre schools might be full for sept but ring around.
You do really need to put his name down for primary school though, ring the schools and ask for application forms .
