Hi all not sure if this is the correct place to post this so mods feel free to move!

Have an interview this wednesday as a veterinary assistant course.

Just wondering has anyone what kind of questions they might ask? or any tips or hints etc...

    Hiya,
The number 1 question you'll be asked is about your experience. They favour people that have experience working in a vets. So blab on about your experience as much as you can. Then normally they just ask why you want to do the course. It's usually fairly straight forward in my experience :)

It depends on the college, if it's St. John's you have to do a small quiz on the computer with general animal questions. With the other college I went to they just rang me and just asked me about my experience and told me I had a place. Took all of 2 minutes.

Sorry I don't know anyone who did that one but i'd say they will be interested to know what experience you have and what you want to get out of the course. Good luck :-)

Yes, 9 people in my vet nursing class in Athlone did it beforehand. Think there is one in Sligo and Carlow too but maybe they are animal care courses.

I really haven't a clue about the course content of either but maybe you could contact the colleges and ask them for a course outline and you could compare them.

Exact same, just a different name :) Officially it's called Animal Care by FETAC.

The official name of the award is Animal Care but most colleges market it as Veterinary Assistant. Be warned there are very few places for FETAC applicants throughout the Veterinary Nursing degrees.

Cavan must have some link with AIT for 9 places to be filled by their students.

The course in Cavan is a Level 5 Animal Care (Veterinary Assistant) in 1st Year but the Animal Management course is a Level 6 with a Higher National Diploma in Animal Management - I discovered this when researching links to DKIT for a student. The HND course is linked to Year 2 of the DKIT Veterinary Nursing degree. So it seems students have another opportunity to progress into the DKIT degree.

There is a link to the DKIT details for progression https://www.dkit.ie/nefhea/getting-dkit-through-nefhea-alliance/science-related-disciplines/science-course-codes-year-2

You need the Level 5 award and the HND award and it appears you must have completed the award as there is an agreement between Cavan and DKIT.

I think so because there were other people in my class who had completed other similar Fetacs elsewhere but they came in as mature students. Maybe you aren't thinking of doing veterinary nursing at this stage but the colleges would be able to tell you about progression after you complete the course.
I have a friend who did 2 years in Dun Laoghaire and was accepted into UCD to do veterinary nursing. She could also have been accepted as a mature student however. My class in Athlone had relatively few students who had just done their LC but I don't anything about the other colleges although I'd like to because I'm very nosey :-)
