Stage 1, Vilanova de Arousa - Sanxenxo (TTT), 27 km

The Tour of Spain starts with the now traditional team time-trial. But there is a difference this year: the increased distance. The route is 27 km in length, compared to 16.5 km, 13.5 km, and 13 km in the '12, '11, and '10 editions of the race. This means that there will be bigger time differences in the overall classification at the end of stage 1 compared to the previous 3 years. The profile is quite flat and the only difficulties are a couple of tricky corners in the last 2 kilometres. The weather forecast is for the teams to have a tailwind for the majority of the route.

The stage should come down to a duel between Omega Pharma Quickstep and Astana, with OPQS being slight favourites. OPQS were narrowly beaten by Orica-Greenedge in the TTT in this year's Tour de France, and that was with a concussion. Although they don't have the likes of Sylvain Chavanel, Michal Kwiatkowski, Niki Terpstra and Peter Velits in the Vuelta squad, they still should be the team to beat. They are the current World TTT champions, and with the world championships less than a month away, they should be in top form.

Astana have brought a fantastic squad, and have some good TT-ers as well, including Janez Brajkovic (2011 Slovenian TT champion), Jakob Fuglsang (2010 & 2012 Danish TT champion), Andriy Grivko (5-time Ukrainian TT champion), Tanel Kangert (3-time Estonian TT champion) and of course Vincenzo Nibali who isn't half bad at TTs ;)

Some of the teams who will be aiming to finish in the Top-5 include: Radioshack (they have Spartacus :)); Movistar (they don't have Jonathan Castroviejo or Rui Costa, but are normally a well-drilled team); Sky (it'll be interesting to see how they perform in the TTT with no Wiggins, Froome or Porte); and Saxo-Tinkoff (Kreuziger, Morkov and even Nico Roche are some of the better TT-ers in the Vuelta this year).

Lotto belisol will be my dubious tip for this stage. They very nearly did it on stage 4 of the tour, I think they just might spring an upset again.

Seriously though, I think Astana are better than OPQS for this.

Orica Greenedge have a chance for me, also like Astana great chance for them to go well with such strong team

I see they have to cycle across sheet ice to begin with.

I believe the term to use at a time like this is "free money".

Btw, Theo Bos has already withdrawn from the Vuelta due to unspecified health issues.

Net-app Endura sitting second at the moment, behind OPQS. Fantastic for them.

    Provisional - 1 Omega Pharma-QuickStep 2 NetApp-Endura +19 3 BMC +20 4 ORICA-GreenEDGE +29 5 Lampre-Merida +40 6 Vacansoleil +1:02

Sky 20" off the OPQS pace at the first time check. Negative split in effect according to Kirby.

Ag2R 1"25 down. Bad news for Betancur.

Nico leads Saxo over the line in provisional 2nd. 16 secs down on OPQS

Turning into a very intriguing TTT, OPQS aside. Sky have now lost Knees and EBH.

    Sky 2nd, 6" off OPQS.

Radioshack ahead of OPQS. Movistar and Astana should go faster again.

Astana win the TTT by 10" from Radioshack and OPQS. Nibali Brajkovic into the leader's jersey.

Carlos Betancur and Ag2r the big casualty of the day. Ride of the day comes from Net-app Endura.

    1 Astana
    2 RadioShack +10
    3 Omega Pharma-QuickStep +16
    4 Sky +22
    5 Movistar +29
    6 Saxo-Tinkoff +31
    7 NetApp-Endura +35
    8 BMC +36
    9 ORICA-GreenEDGE +45
    10 Belkin +49

    I called it :D
