Change of Career Advice

    Hello all,

I got my degree in Information Systems about eight years ago. Since then I've put it to pretty good use. I've had a number of jobs in IT Customer/Technical support, and overall it served me well. I'm currently in an IT/Customer support job and that is pretty stable.

However, I'm absolutely sick of the work. Sitting in front of a computer for 8 hours giving support on a subject that no longer interests me. Even getting promoted/moving up the ladder has lost it's appeal because it's still me sitting in front of a computer giving programmed responses like a trained typing monkey. That isn't to say that the job is bad. It isn't For the last few years I was quite happy, and I've not had any trouble with the employers or people. It's the overall industry of support that no longer offers any stimulation.

I don't want to bad mouth the situation too much. The work has gotten me my mortgage, I'm good at it and I tend to get on with people, and I believe my employers are happy with me. The line of work has allowed me to get me to where I am.

All interest is lost though and I'm really considering a change of career. The thought of still doing this in 10 years time is just depressing. A complete change. Nothing to do with IT, or computers or tech service at all. And I have no idea where to start.

Ideally, I'd love to do something that I currently have an interest and/or passion about. Psychology interests me and I will be doing a course for the next year which should end up with a certificate, but I have no idea of what job prospects there are, where to go for further education, or experience. Right now the goal is to start the course and ask the questions then, but I'd still like to get an idea of what potential there is.

I do like to write, but that's not something I think I can rely on for a steady income or work.

I'm in my twenties, single, no dependents and outside of my current job I have all the time in the world. I can't think of a better position to be in to change career directions and I'm looking for any and all advice that could be offered.

    Thanks for reading :)

    hi there,
not an easy question to answer. 10 years doing the same kind of job can begin to get tedious and sounds like you re craving a bit of a challenge.
you mentioned a mortgage so i guess you need to be careful so you can continue to pay this. Part time courses are a good idea to generate ideas but are unlikely to get you a job unless there is some proper qualification out of them. Career opportunities are limited enough in Ireland at present particularly if you want to try something new. My advice would be to take your time to decide what you want to do. A psychology course could get you into one health and social care or education type course which would probably be more career / professional orientated if that's what you re interested in but you need to be sure that's what you want. Contact people in roles you think you might like and ask them about their jobs. I d be holding onto my job and figuring out what it is i want to do.
