    Hi,

I bought a Honda Civic EK2 1.3 last week and Ive noticed on the M50 that the temp gauge is low but when I slow down on the Tallaght bypass and surrounding roads the gauge reverts to normal, Google tells me the thermostat needs replacing am I right? How much am I looking at?

How do you know what's 'normal' and what's 'low' if you only have the car a week?

Tbh im not sure as I normally dont watch the temp gauge while driving but it seems very low as in just above the 2 line above the C while it sets at just under half on slow speeds, I rang a garage and he said that's normal, im confused.....very confused.

Theromstats are cheap and easy enough to replace. Yours might be stuck open.
Does it take a long time to reach normal opperating temp.

No few mins and its normal but once I hit the m50 it drops.

Edit forgot to mention theres a cold air intake on it would that cool the engine more? I know stupid question.

I had a SAAB 900 that did this when I bought it, Thermostat was stuck partially open, worked fine after replacement. It might cause the EML to come on (it did on the SAAB) as the engine may not get to closed loop which would cause higher fuel consumption and confuse the management system too. Easy job to do if you're any way handy.

The cold air intake only allows cooler denser air to enter the throttle (at least it does if it's installed properly), should have no effect on the engine temperature.

I have a scooby that did this when i bought it turned out that the previous owner had removed it completely so id check to make sure that the thermostat is actually there
