Personal best: had a scam call from Microsoft and kept them on the line for 7 minutes 6 seconds despite telling the guy I was having apple pie and custard for lunch

"Is apple pie and custard offensive to scammers? "

classic from someone spending their afternoon on After Hours instead of having Apple Pie

Older posters will have felt a twinge of nostalgia at the ambiguous hit parade connotations of the title.

On opening the thread, however, it appears to be another interminable, self-congratulatory Spam/Scam yarn.

'ah! Ive been hoping you'd call, but can you hold please? I need to let my pet giraffe out'

put phone down, and walk away/enjoy apple pie elsewhere. Im not sure how long they stay, but damn, apple pie is good

Given the day thats in it I thought the thread title was about a new type of spud.

    I'm disappointed. :(

Fair play, tis better you taking his time up so he can't scam those less clued in.

We had a door to door scammer call here once trying to get us in on a pyramid scheme and I broke his wee scammer heart by chatting about everything and anything except the pyramid scheme for as long as I could muster. Informed him that the neighborhood was a bit down as a local auld fella had passed away (he hadn't) who was a character and then started recalling stories about him. Every time he'd try go back to the scheme I'd go "ah if only he was alive, he'd love this investment thing, ah he was shrewd, sure once he has on the lash for three days straight and then.....".

He ended up just asking outright "look do you want in on this or not?" and then driving off in a tif when I said na

You do know the scam is keeping you on the phone as long as possible don't you?

Check your next bill, they use software to reverse the charges even when it appears they called you.

Someone somewhere is hi-5ing all right.

Don't wish that, once you answer your number is marked as "valid" then the fun starts.

For about the last 2 months I've been getting a call almost daily, I fucked them out of it down the phone, blew whistles, left them hanging on and even asked nicely for them to stop. Did they? Nope.

Last week I got some advice from a friend as follows, I played along and just before I should have been at my computer I casually asked him for my IP address so I could ensure he was legit, he hung up immediately and I haven't had a call since. One to try for anyone who is on the verge of tearing their hair out over the bastards.

LOL! The scammer must have been sorry he ever called. If he'd only used those minutes to calling someone else, he might have gotten money already.:P

Had them on recently. Got them to "hold" while i went to look for my power lead, all the while letting them listen to jingle bells.

Then put the 7 year old on to them for a chat - how was their day, what is the weather like in india, do they wear pants etc.

After 50 minutes i apologised and told them my computer was actually a microwave and i was sorry for wasting their time.
