Mine jumped to €800-and-odd there a couple of years back, no apparent reason. The broker found the same product with someone else for half that - which was much more like it - so I took it. Then the new crowd did the same thing last year, so I wound up with the crowd from the year before that for even less. In short, ring around.

Its a common scam by insurance companies to increase insurance prices. Keep shopping around.

Just say you will be looking elseware for a better quote before getting back to them and they will knock a few hundred off it. Chancing there arm

Nice to know its not just me.
€290 is a serious jump, no a fear of me being able to afford that, cheaper to sell the car and move into town at that rate

yeah my insurance went up alright. from 899 a year to 1100.
I did go from a a 1.2 polo to a alfa 156 2.5v6 though so that explains a lot of it.

OP are you male or female?
If you're female, that could explain it part of it.

On the other hand its still to expensive as Im a 21 year old male,2 years full licence and 3 years ncb.

If it was me id get out the phonebook and ring every broker and insurance company you can and see which one gives the best offer.
I rang numerous companies but liberty's 1100 could not be beaten. In fact, first ireland who have a great reputation for getting a good deal on car insurance came back to me with a quote of over 4000.

I can see why yours went up alright :pac:
Im male, just chatting to Aviva, they will insure me, my miss's and protect my NCB for €412.10 :D

Now that is rather more civilised. TPFT or full-comp?

Mine went up by €150, I shopped around and I am getting it somewhere else for nearly the same as what I paid last year. Current insurer couldn't match the cheaper quote so adios to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

Mine went up by €10 so I shopped around and got it for €450 down from €750.

I could have gotten it for €400 but I'm loath to go with no nonsense.

    Mine went down to €181.90
    I didn't shop around :D
    TPFT

I was thrilled with the new quote, considering the size increase and triple the bhp especially as I had budgetted 1800 for the year. :D
its actually more expensive if I take my gf of my policy who drives a .9L micro.

Id still keep ringing until you get fed up of it. You never know who might turn around and give you a better deal.

Same here. My car insurance from AXA was €675 last year and went to €715.63 two weeks ago. Provisional driver, 5 years no claims bonus, no penalty points but my car is only a 1.3 manufactured 1999 so it's an old car so i decided to contact most brokers and i just decided to go third party only and got it for €376.

It's always the same every year, they put the price up hoping you don't question them and stick in your comfort zone and not to spend time ringing around looking for quotes, but it's essential to look for quotes all over the place until you get a reasonable one that you are happy with, it's worth the hassle.

Axa seem to be at that a lot.. same happened to myself and and another friend.. I shopped around and got it much cheaper, rang Axa told them ill be moving and they match the price straight out, no checking with a manager or asking questions... Still moved company..
If they offered me a cheaper renewal initially they would still have one extra customer!

I didn't call AXA back in relation to the cheaper quote i got, i just didn't bother wasting my time with them, but they sent me two letter reminders and then they called me on the phone but i just said the person you want to speak with is not here.

I have no time for a company i have been with for a year to rip me off, i wouldn't waste a phone call over them in this case :)

All the insurance companies are hiking up prices at renewal. Seems to be part of their business model and reliance on that most will pay up as they know we dislike shopping around.

I am with 123.ie, and just got the renewal mail. Mine went up by 500e. From 340 to 850. I think its time to find some new insurer.
I am 34 years old, driving for 14 years and 5 years no claim bonus.

Typical. Call them up first and explain to them that there has been some mistake, that your premium appears to be moving in entirely the wrong direction for some reason. If they refuse to rectify, move on. I can very nearly guarantee you'll get it off Zurich or RSA or someone for just over €300.

Just rang them now , and nice lady explained that rates went up, and that's the lowest they can go. She apologized 5 times, and she said there is nothing they can do, and there is many people moving somewhere else, due to the price hike. I've asked them only to send me my no claim cert, and I will be moving on.
Damn, my car that I barely ever use is worth less that what they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 186 ✭✭kilclon

AXA increased my quote from 650 to 680 for no reason. When I asked why I was told it was because rates went up:eek:. Then I told them I moved from Wexford to Dub 1 and the put it up to 870. Allianz were the best I found through a broker for 750 fully comp on 04 320cd with 7 years no claims

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,074 ✭✭✭finnharpsboy

    All approximate figures

26, Male, Full licence 7 (full) years, 5 years NCB (75% with Axa), Driving 08 Vectra 1.9 CDTi, Value 9k

I've come to know a LOT about insurance cover through my job. Check your small print.

NCB full protection - no such thing, but the cover is worth it.

AXA (insurer at renewal) €875 - would reduce to €830
    • €350 excess
    • Roadside cover
    • Replacement vehicle (basic)
    FBD - €775
    • Excess €300
    • No Roadside
    • Replacement vehicle (basic)
No Nonsense - €800(despite being FBD)
    • Excess €500
    • No Roadside
    • No replacement
    Aviva - €775
    • Excess €250
    • Roadside cover
    • Replacement vehicle (basic)
    123.ie - €700
    • Excess €300
    • Roadside cover
    • Replacement vehicle (basic)
    Liberty - €700
    • Excess €350
    • Roadside cover
    • Replacement vehicle (like-for-like)
    Allianz - €545 (we have a winner)
    • Excess €200
    • Roadside cover
    • Reaplcement vehicle (like-for-like)

So Allianz were over €150 cheaper than the next nearest competitor

I've also come to know a bit about underwriting through my job.

This is a very very basic understanding, so don't take it as gospel.

Depending on the average payouts by an insurance company in the immediately preceeding 12 months, you could be looking at wildly varying quotes.

Say Axa had a particularly bad July 2012, a renewal falling in August 2013 will be affected by this causing a high quote, however if conversely it has a fantasticly minimal August 2013, then September 2013 renewals will benefit the double whammy of a really bad month being replaced on the scale by a really good month.

Last year I was insured for 450 euro from 123.ie.
Today they quoted me 850, so they can do one.

Looking around, so far, AIG is the cheapest at 550...

EDIT! No Nonsense coming in cheaper again...

    bye bye 123.ie :)

Man bites dog then, just got our renewal notice, down from €370 to €299. AxA.

Very good. I managed to get the same premium as last year, €320, from First Ireland. I won't be with them next year though; low premium, customer service awful. Renewal date has come and gone, still no cert and disc. Axa might be a good bet for next year, all being well. My worst nightmare would be having a claim and being stuck with First Ireland. I'd probably stop driving.

    299 quite unusual, most companies seem to have a 315 minimum as fara s I can see....insured my 2.5 l V6 St200 mondeo for €320 yesterday... :-)

Tesco wanted more this year from me, but 123 offered less so I went with them. Both underwritten by RSA.
