I've been using Parcelmotel for ages and its a great service.

I recently purchased a 40" TV online and had it delivered to PM. Its costing me €35 to have it delivered to my home

Yes, the prices are on the site so its probably my fault for not reading. I thought it should be €14 but the volumetric weight jacks the price up to a ridiculous amount.

I should have used Deliverme.ie. I have used them before and they are very good. Price would have been €22.

Oh well, live and learn. Just be very wary of using PM for "oversized" items.

Thing is, Parcel Motel's website is pretty clear about large items not fitting into the lockers

    http://www.parcelmotel.com/howmuch.html
Oversized/Overweight Items – we charge by size and weight.
Please scroll down for full details of our charges

The largest Parcel Motel locker size is 41 X 38 X 64 cm. The maximum weight is 10kgs.

If your parcel does not fit in the Parcel Motel, we will notify you and make alternative arrangements.

    The charges below will apply:

Now in fairness a 40" TV is going to be very heavy, miles more then 10kg.

Not even sure how you came to the conclusion of 14e when the website says, "If you ask us to deliver a parcel weighing 36kgs, we will charge you €21.00."

I have only used parcelmotel for a few small items but as you say, the prices are clearly on their website. Useful to know about deliverme for really large items for the future.

The TV weighs about 15KG, way less than the 35KG limit for €14 delivery. Its the volumetric weight that got me.

I'm really annoyed that they are so much more expensive than their competitor, Deliverme.ie. I know I should have checked but I (stupidly) assumed that they wouldn't be a rip off.

The max size locker is 41 X 38 X 64 cm, your tv is 41 inches (104cm) there is no way it was ever going to fit in a locker.

I was well aware that a 40" TV would not fit in a locker.

So if you were "well aware" why use them?
This is not a consumer issue it is a whine to Joe Duffy on the radio issue where all the auld ones agree with you.

I don't know if you are a native English speaker but for some reason you seem to be having difficulty in understanding what I am trying to say. First off, the title of the thread is " Beware of using Parcelmotel for large items".

I have admitted several times that the PM charges are outlined on their website. I was caught out by the volumetric weight. I started this thread to highlight the fact that Parcelmotel are much more expensive than, say, Deliverme. Hence the thread title.

I am vaguely aware of who Joe Duffy is but you seem to me more acquainted with what happens on his show.

I couldn't get my head around a 15kg TV could have a volumetric weight so high (over 36kg I assume?). The reason is their calculation for volumetric weight is a bit of a rip off. With Parcel Motel you divide the dimensions by 3000 but with DPD it's 6000 and FedEx/DHL it's 5000. Volumetric weight was brought in by couriers to penalise large but light packages, Parcel Motel seem to be using it to get add-on delivery charges.

Actually podge3 your are wrong as to the cost with deliverme.ie because for a TV the charge would have been 32€ as a 10€ mandatory insurance premium applies for TV's in addition to the 22€ delivery fee. And the 22€ is already a discounted fee as the standard charge is 25€ and they currently have a special price. All cost from their website.

I hadn't checked other couriers but that may explain their higher prices.

My 15KG TV weight "56KG" using their figures.

I wasn't aware of that €10 charge for TVs. I got a TV via Deliverme about 12 months ago and it just cost the €22.

I suppose that makes the PM price look a little better, although just for TVs. Also, I think the standard insurance with PMis just for €50 cover. I assume the Deliverme is for the full cost of replacement.

It looks like they're screwing Parcel Motel customers as it's designed for consumers that don't know any better. Nightline (who own and run Parcel Motel) don't have the vol. weight divisor on their website, but I tried to book a package online from NI to ROI that had a vol. weight of 75kg (by Parcel Motels calc) and it was a flat rate €18+ vat.

Do they have a rep on boards? Thought I saw one before (maybe I'm imagining it). Would be nice to find out why their divisor is half the industry average thus doubling their customers vol. weight.

you could have saved yourself €10.50 if you went and collected it from your nearest Depot?

Parcel Motel is a great service when used within the guidelines, same as a mobile phone contract the minute you step outside the lines you get fleeced. only difference here is that PM have it in plain black and white on the website :) schoolboy error on your part

lesson learned and shared which is great thanks

    Couriers pay for fuel too!

also volumetric weight is an actual fixed mathemathical calculation

    chargeable weight calculation explained

    6000 cubic centimeters per kg.

Therefore you divide the sum of length x width x height by 6000 to get the volume. Actual weight has no bearing on it unless it exceeds the volumetric weight.

Sometime a carrier will do a promotion and give a different divisor - but that's their own business.

This is our local Parcel Motel lockers - Have a look at photo and you will see largest size locker.

The 4 corners seem to be the biggest
