Monday night when I went to take off my garmin the mounting tabs on the back of the unit broke off.I have mailed Garmin UK and phoned them this morning and as I have the unit 2 years it wouldn't be covered .A charge of £68 +postage to get it repaired .Bit steep I think.I would nearly prefer to buy a new one.Has anyone any suggestions or know is there any site where you can purchase the housing and replace yourself?I know I could glue it onto the mount but I would prefer not to .Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened to mine. I ended up making another tab from epoxy resin (araldite). I put it on in rough shape left to let harden and then filed it down to fit. Looks a bit strange but has held up so far for the last 4 months or so. See pic

This is a known issue with the 500, you think someone would make a cheap slip-on replacement housing. Like this, only with a new mounting on it.

TBH, you most probably ARE getting a brand new device from Garmin for your £68. I doubt that they will 'repair' it or replace the housing, esp as the 500 has been effectively replaced by the 510 for new sales, I'm sure they have a surplus.

Garmin are actually ridiculously good at this stuff, I'd take their hand off for a £70 repair. As said, they generally don't repair, the device lands back with them, they confirm it's broken and then throw a refurb in the box and send it back to you. I bought a watch just over a year ago with a year's warranty and it annoyingly died about 6 weeks outside of the warranty period. Sent it into Garmin and they sent me a new one back, no questions asked.
It means that the one you get back will likely last you another 4/5 years, whereas the one you had probably only had 2/3 years left in it before the battery turned to crap.
