Conyngham road speed limit

I got a speeding fine and 2points around 6 months ago on Conyngham road, between SCR and Infirmary road for doing 60 in a 50. I was driving on it tonight and noticed when I turned onto Conyngham road from SCR a sign for 60kmph. Has the limit changed recently or was I done in the wrong?

I was cycling along Conyngham Road towards town from the Chapelizod side of the SCR and there was a barely noticeable 50k sign stuck to a telephone pole.

Hmm thanks, I was full sure I saw a 60k sign just after turning off SCR. Must have misread it. Cheers

Same thing happened to my partner a year ago in the very same spot. The notification of penalty points arrived the day before our wedding.

    She's still bitter.

About the wedding or the ticket?

It drops from 60 to 50 as you enter Chapelizard.

All of Conyngham Road (which stretches from Park Gate to South Circular Road) is 50km/h.

Much of Chapelizod Road is 60km/h.

If you think the signs are wrong, you can report them to traffic@dublincity.ie

Where'd you get that map Victor?
Is there similar for all of dublin?

    Thanks Victor,

I was on that road again today and the sign just after turning right off SCR onto Conyngham Road 100% says 60km/h. I was on to dublin cc and are to get back to me tomorrow.

Did you get any results from this?

It's an absolute scam in my opinion. Speed traps around the place. That and Finglas Road between village and M50 spring to mind.

I drive that road most days towards town and at least one day per week a speed van is set up just before the Dublin Bus Depot. Nice earner I'd imagine

I've been driving that road for 2 years now. The only sign along that entire stretch is 60k so thats what I thought the entire road was up until now.

A few days ago I got a letter through the door saying I was doing 60 in a 50 zone and I actually had to go and look up the speed limit for the area online. There's no signs on the entire stretch. The only one is the one that says 60k.

Unfortunately this is becoming the norm, camera's set up deliberately on stretches that are not posted with clear limits

Surely if the last sign you passed said 60kph and there was no sign denoting a change down to 50kph then you can easily challenge it court ?

If the only sign is the 60km one then you clearly have a case. Go and take a video along the entire stretch for evidence before the problem is fixed.

The Finglas road speed checks are a farce, they almost always involve Gardai underneath the bridge that is the Mellows Road overhead. The farce is that their PR claims they set up in places where fatalities are likely to occur which is a load of rubbish as they spot they set up doesn't even have footpaths and no pedestrian can walk that road as it's just high ditches alongside it till you get to the Bottom of the Hill pub. From the Lidl at the roundabout the road only has one slight bend and is straight thereafter, this is far from being an accident black spot yet the Gardai set up there regularly. The spot they set up in is nothing more than a money generator and does little to improve overall road safety. It also makes the public very cynical towards the Gardai and that's not a good thing either IMO.

I'm not sure what direction we are talking about but anyway. If you are coming from Chapelizod direction towards town then the limit does drop to 50 before the SCR junction and there is a sign. If you are leaving town and going the opposite direction then the limit on the quays is 50 so it will still be 50 kph at Conyngham road as there is no sign to indicate 60kph you must assume you are still in a 50 zone
Where is the 60kph sign that you see?

There's actually a path from the slip road down towards where the Citizens Information office is.

Conyngham road speed limit is definitely 50k. It goes from a 60K zone to a 50k zone coming along the Chapelizod road, from Chapelizod, just between the Salmon Pool complex and the Islandbridge gate of the park. The 60K section along here is less than a mile long.

If there are no visible speed limits signs then you should assume the limit is 50k. It's not a trap to put a speed camera in a location where people commonly break the limit. If the speed van is set up by the bus depot then that location is 50K, there is nothing around there suggesting otherwise. Certainly not on the Phoenix park side of the road.

The Conyngham/Chapelizod rd must be the widest two lane road in the country. Easily 4 lanes wide if not wider at points. With very few buildings on it. So you really have to watch the speedo there.

I doubt its a hotspot for accidents. Is it?

Did DCC get back to you about that?
It must not have been there very long cos I don't remember ever seeing one along there and can't find one on Google Streetview from 2011.
Current responses on this thread are to overtone69 btw

You said in the OP that you saw a sign for 60kph afer turning from SCR on to Conyngham Rd. I have been driving around those roads for years and I live in the area. Conyngham Road is 50kph and has been for as long as I remember. If you 100% saw that sign after checking did you take a photo as proof so you could challenge your fine? Did DCC get back to you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 186 ✭✭kilclon

Soon after contacting DCC about the issue I returned to take a video of the sign. Unfortunately it had been removed, most likely in response to my query, and I was unable to get the evidence I needed and so decided not to pursue the matter any further.
