Asking a sky engineer to do extra work

I'm getting a sky engineer to the house tomorrow to fix my sky box which is banjaxed but while he is here I'm hoping to get him to run cable from the dish to my converted attic. I dont have a sky box to put there yet but I'll pick one up handy on adverts and the like. I intend to watch things on saorview at first before I pair a card to it.

Is it appropriate to ask an engineer to do this kind of thing? And if so what sort of price should I expect him to charge me? Thanks in advance guys

Depends on the Engineer and what way he is with time, say it to him the night before when he rings so he can allow the time, normally no issue, but you can't watch saorview on a sky box, without the card, you will get the free to air channels ie: BBC, ITV, etc.

Each engineer will have their own price, wouldn't pay anymore that €50 if even

    Hope this helps

Sky installers aren't permitted to do work that isn't booked on their job sheet. They could lose their job. However, some will do it anyway for a back hander.

But Sky employ a lot of independent installers and they do what they want (or what their boss agrees to).

    So... it depends.

I had the sky lad but crow guards on the chimneys when he was putting up the dish for a few bob.

Ask nicely and offer cash ... Should work out ok for ya

I remember back when I got Sky + installed I asked the installer to run the 2 extra cables from the quad lnb into two other rooms for me. He was happy to do it even though the weather that day was absolutely awful with torrential rain and where the cables were being run was a bit on the awkward side.

After all that we practically had to force him to take a few extra quid for his trouble.

Sky don"t use engineers for this work. They are installers.

You can hardly blame people for using the term though, as that's what Sky themselves refer to the installers as.

I don't see that Winston was blaming anyone. He was merely pointing out a truth. Anyone seeing the title "engineer" might expect someone with real engineering knowledge to turn up but Sky installers have very limited training, covering the basics of ladder safety, Digibox usage and dish/cable/phone cable installation. You can bet that few of them understand anything about QFPM (Quadrature Frequency Phase Modulation) or Link Budget calculation or in fact anything related to communications theory. Even very basic mechanical engineering such as (screw) Thread Angle determination will be unknown to them. So the "engineer" title is rather hard to justify and quite misleading. In parts of Europe it would even be illegal to use that title without an engineering degree.
