Student contribution tax relief

    Hi all,

I would really appreciate some advice from anybody who knows about the claim of tax relief in the case of claiming on the payment of two student contribution charges for my children last year (academic year 2012/2013). I will of course be calling the revenue office but would appreciate some input from anyone here.

I submitted my application a few weeks ago with all relevant documentation and recipts. Today I have received a letter stating that "the courses you are claiming relief for do not appear on the revenues list of qualifying courses. The list of qualifying courses can be seen on our website www.revenue.ie" we are in the pretty awful position that I am the sole earner for my household of 5 but earn too much to qualify for grants even though we are struggling.

I have triple checked and as far as I can see my children are studying courses that qualify. Last year we paid the full contribution for my daughter who is studying maths and economics at trinity (year 3) a 4 year undergraduate course, and my son's first year student contribution for marketing in dit - a three year undergrad degree.

I see both colleges on the list of qualifying here http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/reliefs/tuition-fees.html#section3

And they satisfy the more than two year criteria
    "
The course must be an approved course in an approved college in the State, in another EU member State or non-EU member State (only postgraduate courses in latter case)
Full-time and part-time Undergraduate Courses must be of at least 2 years duration."

The website does state that I can claim since I pay for more than one child
"Tax relief at the standard rate of tax (20%) is available for tuition fees which includes the Student Contribution but does not include examination fees, registration fees or administration fees."

    Am I missing something here?

    Thanks,

    Jennifer
