When did the definition of this get so laxed?

I always saw hardcore gaming as the sort where you could kill a man with the game's manual

or you get write ups like this done for it:

    It's a f*cking book

written by an actual world war 2 pilot

for people who play ww2 flight sims.

(If I print that out I could probably kill someone with it too)

Since hardcore "metal" became a screaming contest I think.

Probably since gaming became much more mainstream in the last decade and a half and casual / mobile / social gaming has brought lots of people into it that would never be.
Now if you look at a games website now n again, pre-order the odd title and play a competitive MP shooter, you are pretty hardcore!

Aren't hardcore gamers these days the ones who refer to themselves as hardcore gamers? Everyone else just enjoys playing games without worrying about labels?

Cool. Must read that sometime :)

IMO, hardcore gaming are the Koreans who play Starcraft. Those who practise for hours each day to become awesome at their skill to win in competitions. I call them hardcore. Anyone else who plays for hours each day are just normal gamers, imo.

    I play Street Fighter.
My manual can be expressed on a sheet of paper.

    To beat Daigo though...

You really shouldnt need a manual these days as its cheaper to have it in game. There is also more time spent on UI these days thank god and text only tutorials are seen as lazy.

Anyone who claims to be a hardcore gamer isn't - its not something you should be admitting in public.
