3D CAD and acoustic modeling

I am looking to expand my knowledge in acoustics with regard to amplified sound. The ability to predict acoustical behavior through computer modeling to achieve optimum quality and coverage from a PA/line array etc in a specific space would be the desired outcome of any training.

I already have 2/3 years experience with AutoCad, GPS surveying and material volumes modeling (SCC) through previous work on civil engineering projects back in 2009. However it must be said that I have no formal qualification for the above. Since then I have retrained as a Sound Engineer (live sound) and I'm really enjoying it.

From my research into the courses available for 3d CAD Im afraid they are seem to be very construction/product design centered, possibly quite basic and overpriced. To date I have not been able to find any information re courses in acoustic modeling in Ireland to date either.

Basically I wish to get some recognised qualifications in 3D CAD before I approach Irish acoustics companies for work experience and am looking for any advice people have to offer in this regard please.

All answers will be treated with respect and highly appreciated.

    Regards

    K

I'd query the universities (TCD has an active acoustics group) and the consultancies themselves to see what tools they use. My guess is that they get a basic 3D model of the space from the architects and then feed that into specialist finite element software to work out the acoustic fields etc.

I wouldn't bother with CAD training as none of the mainstream packages support free space acoustics (that I know of). Most will have some sort of bolt - on vibration analysis but I'd be surprised if it was any use to you.

  • The only thing that I can think of relating to acoustics/sound is CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and even then I don't think it's very widespread and requires alot of computing power.
