What was the first car to be registered in Ireland as well as each county ?
Pics / reg / make / year /and name of owner at the time,it would i imagine be an interesting piece of Irish motoring history.
Any idea how you would go about researching this ?

The Irish Motoring Directory had this sort of information, probably need to go to libraries to get it all.

Thats very interesting hi5 and unkel, great pic as well, but what i am more interested in is the taxing issue relating to the first car in each county to be taxed.
As well as the different models and reg of said vehicles as i'm sure they all have interesting stories attached to them ?

    On sale at Dreoilin Publications

This book lists all the first owners of the #1 reg car of each county, no mention of the makes though

Ireland's first car was a Benz but it was the 52 nd car to be registered! The first car to be registered was IK 1

My Grandfather is reputed to have had the first car in Mayo. I remember family photos of it but they have long since disappeared. It was a Swift from sometime around 1905 but I have no firm dates. He also had a Model T during the 'troubles' which was regularly borrowed (nicked) by a certain armed organisation that was around at the time! Apparently this used to to piss Grandad off a bit!

IIRC when I had a nose through the old Kerry registration records that IN1 was on a Model T, though I'd have thought that would be too late in the 1900s for the first reg.

Should also be mentioned too that the first cars registered in Ireland were registered in December 1903 in many counties, with other counties following closely after in January 1904.

Dublin had County and City registrations at that time too. RI1 was the first County borough issue.

The first car registered in Kilkenny, IP 1, was owned by Colonel Robert C. Knox of Callan.

Here's a picture of Dr Colohan driving his Benz. Just happened to spot this on a wall in Hunters Hotel in Ashford yesterday. Taken before the car got its reg plate. Sorry for lousy quality, someone was sitting directly in front of the picture
