Can anyone tell me what the craic is with the reviewing of the medical cards for over 70's? My uncle is mid 70's, multiple health issues, only source of income is the state pension, and still they are messing around with his card. I have heard from 2 public health nurses that lots of old people are being reviewed, causing a lot of hassle and stress. Heartless feckers.

In the old days (not so long ago:)) it was HSE policy to review O/70's every 5 years. If their sole income was State Pension or Non-Contributory Pension & savings were less than €20K the card was renewed for another 5 years. Dunno what the policy is now. All now done from a central office that gives the impression that they are making it up as they go along:rolleyes: Absolutely no transparency:(.
Rant over !!! What sort of questions are the asking?

The form filling and finding documentation is a hassle but giving them the relevant info should reassure many over 70s of their eligibility to retain the card.

Since 5 April 2013 the gross income limit for the over 70s medical card is €600 per week for a single person and €1,200 per week for couples...

Over 70s: assessment of capital: Savings or similar investments of €36,000 for a single person and €72,000 for a couple are disregarded. A notional rate of interest is applied by the HSE to the balance...

Property: over 70s only: Income will not be assessed from property (whether a family home, a holiday home or any other property) unless it is generating a rental income. The income to be assessed will be the actual income, less any cost necessarily incurred associated with the rental of the property. Such costs may include insurance premiums, loan or mortgage repayments, maintenance, etc.

Pretty much the same as the standard form. I don't mind submitting information, it's the emotional stress and worry that bothers me on behalf of the person concerned. I know eventually it will be granted, the income level is low, but surely they know all that from PPS records? Anyway, thank you both for responding to my mini-rant.
