Here is a scenario a relation of mine is in, he normally lives in the uk and has a uk licence , now he has been living and working here now for nearly a year and has been going back and forth to the UK

He is thinking of going for the lorry licence and i want to know is it possible for him to take the Irish test and gain the licence that way or does he have to do it in the UK?

He can do it here but will have to get a learners permit first same as the rest of us.

If your relation was living and working here in Ireland for a year then he is more than likely resident in Ireland.

In such case he doesn't really have a choice, as you can only pass a driving test in a country you are resident in. So he has to do it in Ireland, and once he pass his test, he will have to apply for Irish licence document and surrender his UK licence.

But can he keep his uk licence for now and do the lessons and lorry test using the uk licence here?

Se he works a couple months here and then maybe a month in the uk and it would be a lot handier if he could do test here on uk licence.

Technically he won't be really using his UK licence for test or lessons.
He needs to apply for C category driving permit (formerly known as provisional licence). To apply for this he will need his B licence, but I suppose they will just look at it and take photocopy at motortax office.

Then once he has his C category driving permit, that's all he needs for lessons and driving test.

Once he pass his test, he will apply for driving licence, and he will have to attach his driving permit, UK driving licence, and test pass cert (and possibly few month things), and he will get Irish driving licence for category B and C.

PS - there is no obligatory lessons in Ireland so he might go for a test without taking any/

OK so simply has to hand in uk licence to motortax office, they will add the C category and then I take it he is issued with a new irish licence with lorry entitlements?

What if he got C added here and took test and pass cert to driver licencing in UK would they still honour it and add it to uk licence?

Yes - all this after he pass his test for C category here in Ireland.

I'm not 100% sure if I understand what you mean, but if you are saying that he will pass a driving test in Ireland and go with a pass cert to UK authority to add C category to his UK licence - then answer is no.

No they will tell him to apply for a theory test , get a medical and a passport photo. Then come back with all of the above and they will give him a learners permit, he still keeps his full licence its not given in.
    (They want money too )
