Can you truly appreciate a modified car?

It got me thinking the other day I mean modified in the sense of bodykits, vinyl wrapping, neons etc, that kind of modifying, some people can do it and make their standard car look amazing, but it costs thousands, a guy i know has spent in excess of 15,000 on his, 5 of which was on the interior alone

I'll admit my car has small mods on it, bonnet lifters, white parking lights/interior lights, but that's as far as it goes

Would you not be better off just buying a higher spec car with mods on it that were intended to be on it?

Anyways what does everyone else think?

It depends on definition of modified..... Barryboys material or sleeper appeals to different people

I was one of them a few years ago, spent woeful money and dead embarrassed about it now :o

Thought I was the ****izzle too!

I can still appreciate a decently modified car though but like 1% of the current muck.

I can appreciate a bmw with a zender kit but hate them on an alfa.

Generally when it comes to modifications I prefer a car that's been modified to improve handling, braking and power such as improved shocks and springs, upgraded discs and pads an ecu remap etc.

I rarely understand why people go put bodykits on standard cars. If it was something special and came as a factory option but the previous owner didn't go for it fair enough. If its a non factory option bodykit, especially if its felty then no thanks.

The first vinyl wrap car I saw was a bmw 645ci. It looked unreal on the car and really have it an aggressive look. Then I started seeing renaults and vws and 318s with ****ty debaging and wrap quality and it looks crap.

As an engineer I can appreciate the idea of hacking/modding something to improve its performance.

But spending a tonne of money on fake non-functional parts and totally out of proportion sound systems shows they've more money than sense or a cry for attention.
Especially if you put go-faster stripes on the likes of an Opel Corsa / Micra.

In my opinion, if your going to modify a car, it has to be a car with some class or prestige in the first place, when several year old merc's, bms and audis can be picked up for peanuts, I just laugh / cringe when I see anything else tarted up...

I've seen that Cupra R in Newbridge, not sure on the wrap but it's got a nice road presence.

It depends on the car and it depends on the modification. Im much more impressed by performance modifications than I am by cosmetic mods. Id prefer a car that looked stock but was a beast to drive than a car with a noisy exhaust, some ridiculous tacky nonsense bolted on that is completely stock on the inside.

Its extremely rare that you see a car in this country with cosmetic modifications that look anything other than amateur and cheap.

He's put 15k into it??? If i put 15 k in to my car (same engine) i'd have at least 330bhp and the suspension and brakes to match, but it would be the same colour it left the factory as.
