Ocular Dominance

What the hell is ocular dominance :D

Basically it's to do with your eyes and which one is the dominant one.
It has come up a bit in other threads before but I said I'd start a new one especially for it.

The video below has a test for it and a bit of advice when lining up shots...a bit of advice that I'll need to use myself as I have serious issues with alignment!
I've lost track of how many people have said it to me and it was quite frustrating because it seems like a stupid thing to fall down on, I always put it down to concentration or just being careless, but I am going to give this a go to see how it works.

Low point came two weekends ago when I was hitting the ball really well, my playing partner, a complete stranger said "You're swinging it nice but for fcuk sake, you're aiming 20 yards right of the green"...Not good when you fade the ball :o

Apparently it's best to be Left Eye Dominant (if right handed and vice versa)
I'm Right Eye Dominant and Right Handed. I'm pretty sure I'd be a scratch golfer by now if only for my eyes ;)

Anyway, it might be all BS, but at least it's another excuse that some of us could use!

Good post, thought it was only for putting, so I'm right eye dominant too, will pay more attention to this, I miss right too with good swings, annoying.

Itching now to go out and try that :pac:

Do be all over the place sometimes when setting up to hit a ball.

That could be 1 of the 10 reasons alright :D

Yeah Right, Right myself. Thats my excuse so I'm sticking to it!

My Mam is Left Eye, Right Hand, and she doesn't play golf. Don't know why she couldn't just pass that genetic advantage on to me. Think I should take a case for neglectful parenting against her!

Well as someone who is definitely left eye dominant (can hardly see out of the other one!) and right handed, I can absolutely say that this "advantage" I seem to possess has had no tangible effect on where I hit the ball, at all....!

Oh so all over this ;)

Not sure if I can change which eye the smiley looks out of though

My right one hangs a little lower than my left one

Went out to a nearby field I use for practice, tried this before the Arsenal match. Hit about 15 balls with my 7 Iron, a tyre was the target, hit it directly 3 times. Put me off a bit on some swings as I was a bit self aware, but seems sensible enough.

I'm left eye dominant and right handed. Good to know my alignment might be alright... Pity i swing like an ape!

Interesting topic thanks OP, I'm right handed and right eye dominant and have on occasion been left confused with short irons shots that go straight right after what I believed was a good swing and strike, and a lot of the time when I feel my stance is too open I hit it straight and can clear the body comfortably.
I must try this method of alignment and see how I get on.
If all fails, at least I have another excuse!

Ball moves no matter which eye I close :(

    "Central vision" apparently

edit: definitely left eye dominant using this test though http://www.wikihow.com/Determine-Your-Dominant-Eye

Did golf test again and ball doesn't move when have right eye closed but only if circle is small.

You have two left eyes :)

Very interesting I noticed Mark Crossfield is left eye dominant on one of his golf guru videos and he's a pro. Also lefty would be the inverse.
Anyway I was out measuring irons the other day no wind etc..
I was aiming at the flag from 160m and all my shots were to the right and off the green.
    Thanks for the tip

Ah here, it mightn't work if you're blind drunk :)
Only messing, another way of checking is to scroll up a piece of paper and look through it, close alternative eyes and you'll find out.

Apparently Hogan, Nicklaus and Tiger are all left eye, right hand dominant.
Add Rickylovesuall ;) to those 3 and you've got the 4 greatest players to grace the game that all have the advantage over the rest of us. :)

I'm pretty much blind in my left eye so i had no need to do the test.
I must try a more straight-on set up for now on.

To the guys saying they are almost blind in their left eye no need to do the test or whatever, that doesn't matter. You can still have really bad vision in your dominant eye. Which could further weaken your ability to hit the ball :-(

I'm right eye dominant and have worse vision in the right eye. I went to an optician and was fitted for a script that helped my right eye and made the left a bit worse and it helps I think.

But I'm still a high h/c it didn't make me Nicklaus.

They just had a snippet on this on "Inside the PGA Tour", just got the last bit of it.

Furyk & Braddely both line up their putts with one eye closed. Didn't get anymore than that.

I putt as if I have lined it up with both eyes closed... That's gonna change this year... Of course ;)
