What I don't understand is why you still have to put your entire PIN in before using these machines. ATMs being targeted is nothing new. I use online banking. For online banking you have a six digit PIN and you're only ever asked to input three of those digits...first, fourth and fifth, or maybe second, fourth and sixth...point being, you're never required to type in your entire PIN. Would it not make more sense for ATMs and instore card readers to work on the same principle? If nobody knows your PIN then surely that reduces this kind of crime?

That's not really the same thing.
“When the card gets stuck the person says that has happened to me before, I’ll get it out for you”.

You've got someone duped here according to that article. Watch for people up too close to you. Don't let anyone have a chance to get at your card. As that's what's being shown to be a problem there. It's very basic stuff.

So basically someone has to be behind you when your using the ATM? Jees, it's clear the recession has even hit these lads hard...

There was a funny thread on here recently with people who struggled to remember their 4 digit pin. They'd lose the plot if that became commonplace...

I had people get annoyed when I asked them to stop breading down neck when I was going to the A.T.M. This is why I don't want someone near me when I'm at the A.T.M.

I've never been given bread at an atm.

    How was that?

Nothing ground breaking in the sense of ATM scamming. But still it's a new take on it.

I'm not a big fan of atm machines. What's the alternative I know, digital money all round? even worse IMO. But the idea of an ATM isn't really that secure when you think about it. It's a random machine generally out in the open. You don't know if it's been modified etc.

Plus it lets the whole street see that you're now carrying cash and they can see which pocket you put it in.

I generally prefer to get cash-back on my debit card. Otherwise, the ATMs inside shops are a good bet.

Don't see it helping.Could the scammer not see your three digit code?

You are asked for a different set of 3 digits from the 6 digit code each time you use it. So there are 20 permutations possible. They would have to follow you for and watch you put it in a few times to get all 6 digits.

However, I would agree with an earlier poster that using a system such as this would be impracticable because most people are too stupid and lazy to use it correctly. Hell, most people are too stupid and lazy to use the current 4 digit pin system correctly, taking the number down in their phone, using the same one on all cards, writing it on their t-shirt while offering people a chance to hold their card if the promise not to steal...

The last one may be an exaggeration but the point still stands.

Two things I've learned from this thread..

    1) Beat the crap out of anyone attempting to help me retrieve a bank card that appears to be stuck in an ATM.

    2) Don't attempt to help anyone who's card appears to be stuck in an ATM.
