Looking to purchase a Giant Defy 4 but I notice some of the other higher spec Defy range now seem to have a 2014 version whereas the 4 is still 2013.

New to bikes so maybe a silly question but will there definitely be a 2014 version of the Defy 4 and if so is it normally worth waiting for the latest one for a novice is it really not going to make any difference...

    Well there's a 2014 Defy 5. But oddly enough I can't find anything for a Defy 4

The difference between them is the componants Shimano Claris on the 5 with Shimano Sora on the 3

I'm not very informed on the new Sora stuff but I believe it's the same as the previous generation Tiagra components. I have this generation of Tiagra on my bike and I think it's fine. The only gripe I have about my bike is that the shifters are not Tiagra and use a little thumb button for shifting down the cassette instead of a lever. After 2 years of riding It's very much a pain in the bum. I think the new generation Sora use the lever shifters and for this reason I would recommend the Defy 3 (assuming the Defy 4 uses lesser components in this regard).

You shouldn't get yourself too set into what you want to buy. Your better off going to the bike shop, telling them your price (€800 or something) and they'll sit you up on a few bikes. You'll find different ones more comfortable for different reasons. The latest and greatest isn't always they best. But there are definitely design choices I would avoid if I was going again.

There is no Defy 4 in the 2014 range..

Probably because of confusion it's been dropped for 2014... After all there are around 6 Defy models from the top of the range carbon to the alu

Interesting! May have to go look again so as the Defy 4 was the one in the price range with carbon forks.

    .

Claris? Is that the new name for 2300?

I guess the other main diff between the 5 and the 3 is the 3 is now the first one with the carbon fork...

I think so yes, it's definitely the new one below Sora but I don't know if they're keeping 2300 as well. Looks pretty good, no thumbshifters afaik.

Just checked, it's 8 speed, no thumbshifters, Octalink bb. Replaces 2300
