    Hey,
I'm flying into Amsterdam on the morning of the 30th August, leaving the next morning to go to Munster in Germany for the weekend and then getting a train to stay in Berlin for four days.

I don't know much about Amsterdam, just wondering if people have any suggestions for stuff to do in a day. I've pretty much short-listed the Anne Frank house and probably the Van Gogh museum. I'm not really interested in coffee shops or anything but any ideas would be great.

Berlin, I think I have pretty much covered but any suggestions wouldn't hurt.

    Thanks for reading.

There is a place called Zaans Schans, a short bus journey from Amsterdam Central; you can go inside an old-school windmill and see how it works - thought it was pretty cool. A nice place to spend a morning.

For Berlin I would recommend Sachsenhausen. Was more poignant for me than Auschwitz.

The Heineken Brewery is good for a few hours and will give you a short boat trip on a canal too.

Do a walking tour. Was in Berlin and Amsterdam last summer and did one in both.

They're a great way to see the city and if you do it on the first day there then you will get a good sense of direction around the city centre. The one I did in Amsterdam was this one http://www.newamsterdamtours.com/daily-tours/new-amsterdam.html.

Do a canal bot trip, good way to see the city too.

In recent years, I decided to be less ambitious with my short city-visits. I pick one or two things to do, max. Then I just follow my nose and explore. By all means read up and develop a general idea, then just ignore the touristy stuff except for the two things you really want to do.

If I had 24 hours in Amsterdam, I'd do your Van Gogh museum and get a tram back into town and walk along the Prinzengracht to get to Anne Frank House and from there wend your way across the canals, down the streets in the direction of the Jordaan neighbourhood. Very atmospheric day or night, trendy and great places to stop for purchases, food, beer and maybe some kroketten. Though I hear Pijp is totally trendy now, but rougher.

A stroll through Vondelpark would probably be nice, too. There's a pavillion where you can grab a beer and a snack.

Berlin: where do I start? So I won't.

    Great advice.

A stroll through the Jordaan delivers the quintessential Amsterdam experience & the small cafe's, second-hand bookshops & countless tranquil canalside spots make it perfect for wandering about.
