child benefit

At five years old our child benefit was stopped, we were told an EU regulation made it compulsory for the father's country to pay, being on a UK old age pension, which they have paid.
However our son was born in Ireland to an Irish mother, he has well neither of them have lived outside the state, surely as an Irish citizen by birth and right the state should be responsible.
Has anyone else had this problem, I guess being an old age pensioner dad has thrown the system, there cannot be too many of us.
We have written to the authorities in Ireland and have not received a reply one of our TD's said nothing he could do, the other one was not interested.
No one has come up with the regulation as to why this occurred.
Any one can help us please. Or should we just sit back and forget it.

The Citizens Information info on Child Benefit http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_to_families_and_children/child_benefit.html contains this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/downloads/part9.pdf to EU Guidelines and the basis for the decision re your child's payments is likely to be contained in there, but you continue to seek clear and referenced basis for its decision from the Child Benefit Section in Donegal.

That can not be true, what about kids who have no father registered?ring child benefit if anything it would make sense based on the mothers nationality.
They do not give unmarried fathers rights so the child benefit is hardly going to be based on their nationality.
DO you have a letter or anything from them stating this?

Thanks, yes we do have a letter, telling us an EU regulation, the citizens advice confirmed it, Phil Hogan said it was correct, our other TD didn't bother.
Nobody else will believe it happened, an Irish born child to an irish mother excluded from the benefits system, to make it even better we do not get the difference between the English and Irish benefit, Ireland is more.
Letters to Letterkenny are not answered, phone calls ignored, we are told they are very busy.
We have since put the whole thing on the back burner as we get very annoyed hearing how people from Eastern Europe are getting benefits, good luck to them, it is a pity Irish are not treated accordingly.
    But thanks once again.
