Motor Tax arrears

    Hello,

Can someone clarify the arrears process for taxing my car please?

Do I pay arrears plus the tax due. Let's say 4 months without tax, should I pay 4 months of arrears plus the 4 months of tax due?

    For my car:
    4x29.83 arrears,
    Plus backdate tax to April.

Or do I just pay the arrears and tax it from now?

    Thanks!

You would pay 3/6/12 months at the normal rate, and then 1/12th of the yearly rate for each month that you are in arrears.

A new law has come in recently saying that you'll have to pay any arrears, this will take affect from the start of September, what you have to is 'to get it taxed from this month and not the last few months' is go to the gardai and get one of those rf104 forms I think they are called, fill in details and get a gardai to stamp it, get up to your local motor tax office pay up and it will be renewed from this month. Do it before September or you'll have to from April.

It was always the law that you had to pay arrears in fairness; some people just felt that that didnt apply to them...

Ok lads, cheers, I thought that the tax would have to be backdated alright. Thanks for that.

Your right but luckily for me I was abroad for the number of months mine was out, lots of tax dodgers out there.

I actually worded that badly; you didnt have to pay arrears if the car was genuinely off the road.
