New engine problems

My father has just had a second hand engine dropped into his 2000 1.25 Ford fiesta to replace a seized one (yes I know I told him it would be easier just to get a new car but he insisted).

Since the replacement the car has been jumping when running. It seems pretty severe and the whole car judders and lurches. The problem completely goes away after 10 minutes driving or if the car is left running for 10 mins. Seems to be only there when the engine is cold.

The replacing mechanic replaced the fuel pump and filter but the problem persists.

Any thoughts? Would be much appreciated.

    * Disclaimer - I know pretty much SFA about cars in general, just problems I've come across *

I had a Micra a few weeks ago that was on the kangaroo juice, jumping all over the place, replaced the distribution cap and no real change. I was convinced it had to be something to do with the fuel supply.

Describe the problem to the auld lad and without even looking at it he said the Lambda sensor, went out and disconnected the lambda and she was running sweet as anything. Replaced the lambda then and no problems since.

Small Fords of that era are renowned for throttle position sensor loom problems.

Replace the TPS and clean the connector that attaches to it, follow the wiring loom to the multi connector (should be somewhere behind driver headlight) twist open and clean male and female sides.

Symptoms of TPS are exactly as you describe.

Should only take 30-40 minutes to do the above and require minimum tools and minimum experience.
Expect to pay in and around 50 euro for the TPS.

Edit: On second thoughts I'd try cleaning the connectors first and then move onto replacing the TPS.

Thanks both very much. Appreciate the advice. I will try the TPS and the Lambda.
