Are you legally allowed reclaim commonage? As in drain it and reseed etc. Are there specific rules/laws preventing you doing such a thing?

I currently don't own any commonage but was thinking of investing if I could with a view to reclaiming it

If you can buy all the shares in that commonage then you can. the other choice if that it is legally divided and then again you would own a certain amount.

I was thinking more of laws protecting habitats and so forth. Something along the lines of Special Area of Conservation laws. Is there a blanket type law for commonages?

I don't think so. Contact you local teagasc or NPWS office and they will tell you whether its designated or not. I have bit of Commonage and its not currently an NHA or SAC.
