cant get a thread to stay up long enough to get an answer to this!

i heard a story from my kids involving a concert at the weekend.
so i went to search and all content was blocked.

    so it got me thinking

who is responsible for deleting all reference and how is this possible?

so anything that is sensitive is removed ?
that sort of defeats the purpose of using the internet to transfer information.
    is the internet now censored?
who makes the decisions as to what is censored and is the decision making process debatable?
or does a goverment decide a topic is off limits and bans it?
all seems a bit suspect to me
i dont see how they can enforce this?

Various forums and providers choose to censor (edit really - they're not government bodies) materials that relate to vulnerable young girls and the idle curiosity of dirty old men who should know better. It's called a judgement call - no-one is obliged to serve up titillation on demand.

Don't mention the thing with the people at the concert....

Unless you want to be woken up in the middle of the night by burly men in black nomex suits and facemasks....

If that's your thing.....go right ahead

ive two young daughters the same age so i was shocked by it.
when i went to search for further information it was only media reports.

thats very different from individual sites blocking content, it would appear the story was completely shut down and all offending content removed.
this is a very unfortunate incident and more of an embarrassment , however it raised the question , if thats locked down so quickly , what else is

    forget the particular incident

im asking specifically if the internet is censored and by whom?

I have 2 young daughters as well, although significantly younger but it is worrying alright. What bothers me most about all this is that the lads seem to be coming out of it as heroes which just doesn't sit right.

To answer your question it'd be virtually impossible to censor the internet pure by sheer scale and technical complexity. Ask the Chinese, they've tried and from what I gather they're having a hard time doing so.

In this particular case I'm guessing we're really only talking about a handful of websites, Twitter, Facebook and the likes of Boards. All of those sites would be well versed in the procedures in cases like this and have their own protocols to start clamping down on things like this. Once the guards are involved they know they may as well do it before anyone asks and save themselves the headache.

This isn't exactly a matter of freedom of speech and once the words child pornograpy are mentioned any website looking to make money (legally of course) will take action PDQ.

I'd imagine if you started looking in the somewhat seedier corners of the internet it shouldn't take much effort to drag up a picture of the 'incident'.

i dont want to talk about the incident as the thread will be taken down.

that seems fair enough about the main sites but my kids said this went worldwide so i was thinking it would be all over the internet.
thats something to be thankful for considering the girl and her family.

ill accept then that its an isolated incident, the main sites involved shut it down and understandably so.

    that makes sense

if the mods want to remove the post my question has been answered and im satisfied with this train of thought

In theory it might be possible.
I heard something recently about the US getting in "trouble" over creating a second internet by acting as the go between of sort.
Not sure how much of this is true, rumour has it they were able to act as a go between so everyones info passes through them before reaching its destination without much lag.
Maybe thats what they are building out in the Nevada desert or wherever that massive data centre is.

Its still there, I think you need to learn how to search/use the internet ?

Theres a thing called google images try that

I would have thought it next to impossible to fully delete anything as there are back up caches etc and once it is downloaded can be uploaded somewhere else then indexed by google. Interestingly I recently saw a computer magazine with acover story of how to erase everything about you on the net

Might be possible to erase most of the info about yourself to prevent new searches from finding that info. But I'm pretty sure as you mentined it is all cached somewhere anyway.
Long as you don't become a target, it's not a serious issue....for now I think.

What happened at the last Daniel O'Donnell concert
If it involves S&M, must be bad.

was talking to someone today about this.
apparently there is nothing safe online anymore

    http://www.computerworlduk.com/news/security/3463163/email-provider-for-nsa-whistleblower-snowdon-shut-down/

    https://lavabit.com/

you could in theory encrypt all your information and have that stored on a server.
it would appear now that its illegal to hide any information online!
