PC Upgrade

    Hey all,

I am looking to upgrade some parts on my PC. I bought this machine about 2 years ago and it's still going strong, I would just like to get more our of my machine in terms of performance and graphics.

My MB is an Asrock P67 Pro3 which I would like to keep.

The CPU is Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz which I am also happy with. I think this is good enough?

My current GPU is ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5. It runs everything pretty well and doesn't give me any trouble. I want to upgrade with Battlefield 4 in mind, I would like to play this in max settings with a decent FPS (too much to ask?). I am thinking of getting something around the 200 mark like this.

I am running with 8GB of DDR3-1600 ram. I think this is plenty.

I am also looking to get a new HD, SSD for processes and a "normal" hd for storage. Doesn't have to be too large. I have 500 gigs at the moment and it's doing me just fine. I have a lot of large pictures in raw and jpg format, this is where most of my storage is going (and games of course).

The form factor for my machine for a HD is 3.5", but I can only find 2.5" SSD on hardwareversand.de. I was looking at something around the 100 mark like this. I just picked this one at random, it's within my price range and I can't imagine needing more room that 120gb. Well for the moment anyway.

What are your opinions? I don't know much about the best SSD or GPU at the moment for the prices above.

    Thanks a million.

Is the bus type important in relation to PCI expres slots? Seems that my MB has 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 and the GPU I listed above has 1 x PCI Express 3.0 x16.

They are backwards compatible so you should be fine. SSD generally come in 2.5" format, you can get adapter brackets to fit a 3.5" mount, but i just have mine taped in out of the way as they are so light and no moving parts.

Check out the non pro samsung 840 ssd, you are unlikely to see any great benefit going for the pro version. I would put the money saved into the graphics card, there have been HD7950s going for around the €250 mark if you keep an eye on bargain alerts thread. That would keep you going at high/ultra settings at 1080p for a good while

Have you overclocked your cpu at all yet? What cooler do you have on it? It would be a waste to not overclock it. You could easily get another 35%+ out of it. 4.5ghz should be easy with even a cheap (€30) coolermaster hyper 212 evo.

If you use amazon you can get free delivery as well although the ssd and hdd cost a little more the Asus 660ti for €217 is great value.

I'd go for the following. Use the ssd for windows and your programs, the 1 tb wd blue for games and the 500gb for storage. Add sata cables if you need them.

    Asus 660ti £186/€217

    Samsung 840 120gb €88.36

    Hard drive €58.30

    Total €364

Add the 212 evo if you don't have a good cooler already and get overclocking :)
