Last night around 11ish I thought a gun had gone off...in my house, ran into the shed and my feckin wheel was in smithereens. I had pumped up the tyre to about 115/120PSI and then KABBBBBBBOOOOOM 15mins later, wheel destroyed?

Lovely old wheels that I bought off a fellow boardsie? Ultegra hubs, any point in getting rim replaced and rebuilt?

My tyres have a max capacity of 90 psi and I'm afraid to put it up near to that because of the potholes near me. Is 120 not a bit high?

Looks like it wasn't the tyre that blew out though - it was the wheel

120 is fine...old worn rims are the problem here.

Your lucky it did'nt blow out on the road. Old rims. If the hubs are good get them rebuilt. 120PSI is fine, people on tubs would go higher (although that takes the clincher rim etc out of the equation blah blah etc)

Yeah sorry you are correct it was actually the tub, half of it is ripped apart, the tyre is actually intact but the rim ripped apart.

    gutted!

    Jaysus!

How can you tell if your rim is worn? (Apart from it having blown up obviously.)

Happened to us on a baby buggy once.. pumped it up to much thinking it would be easier to push. We were down in Dingle on holiers and having lunch in a pub when "bang" the thing exploded.. thought a bomb had gone off it was so loud:eek:

There's a wear line cut into the rim.

I did while inflating a badly seated tube.

Rather a loud bang scared the shiite out of a crowded sitting room and they all look around to see me in a cloud of that white powder that stops the tube sticking to itself. My ears were ringing for half an hour after it.

No damage to the rim in my case though.

It was really bloody loud all right, ran down stairs (well behind the missus) thought a banger had come in through the letter box!

Interesting night time ritual you have there, pumping your tyres before going to bed. :D
    Lovely old wheels

Hope you didn't pay much for them...

I'm sorry but the image you create has me sitting here giggling. :D

And after all time you spent cultivating your image as an all knowing bike guru amongst your friends. Awkward. :D

    Yep.

I was changing a tube for my girlfriend while watching TV with GF and my two house-mates so I was right beside the tyre when it blew.

Of course I tried to play it cool as if this was a routine part of changing a tube.

Not on old rims I think. Rims wear from braking - they just don't last forever. Debris trapped in the brake pads will speed it up greatly. Usually they will bulge slightly before breaking.

Do all wheels have that line that can be checked? What about Zipps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭086Jazzy

Loaded question but how many km can you expect to get from a set of wheels before the rims wear out?

Depends on how much braking u do. Applying the brakes is what wears out the rims.

Check your pads regularly, you will feel a concave in your rim if they are worn, bring wheel into Cliff in Eurocyles south William st, if hub is in good condition he can rebuild it onto open pro ,or similar

There was me just having decided that my winter trainer would have rim brakes and not discs! How many winters can you realistically expect from a set of rims?

Loads. I got about 4 years out of some Racing 7s.

Might still be repairable. Take it to LBS and see if they'd be willing to attempt a rim job.

Could we tell how many break pads we would use up before the rim is at risk? Lets say the pads are clean all the time and no sharp objects cutting into rim.

Im still on my frist break pads but they are coming to end of life & will be changed soon.

    None.

    Or any reputable Bicycle Shop....

Also it may not always be worth a re-build unless you have a good quality hub. In some instances a new front wheel will be cheaper then paying for price of Rim & Labour.....

How often are you going to clean your pads. Every spin? Twice per spin? After every puddle? It doesn't take long to forget to check.

It varies with the type of pads you use also. I use Koolstop Salmon pads these days and I'm seeing very little rim wear with them and I don't check for debris at all.
