Not renewing any tv package, what is available online?

Hi, I wonder if someone can give me advice on my decision not to renew with UPC or Sky. I never really watch TV, just stuff I download. I also have Netflix. Just looking for anyone else in similar situation as to what they do for home entertainment, I have the facility to hook up tablet to my TV to watch anything online also. I also have a media player which can stream youtube etc.

Stuff like sky news, rte/bbc etc are available on their websites. Can RTE be watched live on the internet?

One thing I would possibly consider is a saorview box, has anyone any opinions on them?

I think the world is moving away from paid TV subscriptions and more to an internet/ on demand type of setup.

Will have to go to the pub to watch Heineken Cup Rugby though (which I don't mind!)

Not all RTÉ programmes are available live online e.g. nothing live on 1 or 2 at the moment - http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/live/7/

Saorview boxes do what they say on tin i.e. they give you access to the Irish channels (aerial required) - http://www.saorview.ie/what-is-saorview/

I'm in similar position , my wife only really watches soaps, kids cartoons, I watch films so I've started using netflix on I pad , I haven't cancelled sky yet, I'm borrowing Apple TV box and seeing as mrs has I phone I'm going to see if we can adjust to using I pad and I phone through Apple TV .

If that works I'm considering getting 2 apple boxes for 2 TV s and cancelling sky altogether.

Mrs can use rte and tv3 player for soaps,

Does anyone know when you cancell sky if your still left with uk channels ?

A lot of the Irish channels can be watched online for free providing you have an irish isp.

There could be other options but 1 available is Freesat for UK channels (on Demand will not work as you need a UK IP address) for Irish channels as mention above Saorview (a receiver or compatible TV)

@monkeysnapper if you have the latest sky hd box and you cancel it leaves you with very little and still shows the irish epg but if you take the irish card out and unplug box from wall, leave for about 5 mins, plug back in and you should get the UK default epg, this will have bbc1 as 101 and so on. It will also give you the free HD channels. If you have a uk FTV card that will give you channnel 5 hd. The boxes are getting smarter, if you take out uk ftv card CH5 HD disappears from epg. If the above fails there is another way but cross that bridge when you come to it.

I got loads of regional itv and bbc channels through putting in codes , (service/other channels) plus loads of other channels, that you can't record , will I keep these, I suppose if I take card out ill find out. I have older sky plus box. Thanks for info gbcullen

when you do the card bit above you will lose whats in the other channels but they will now be on the epg.

If you have a tv aerial you could get a combo box and have rte, etc ie saorview along with the Free uk channels and if you add an external usb drive a PVR. Not very expensive.

If you have an ipad / iphone and broadband (no limits download allowance), I suggest the following.

Invest in an apple tv (€109), you can then get the following.

    1. Sky News - dedicated app on Apple tv.
    2. Aertv app - rte1/2/tv3/3e/tg4. stream from ipad to apple tv.
    3. Film on tv app - bbc1/bbc2/ch5/itv and loads more, stream from ipad to tv.

There are probably more apps out there

I have a Freesat HD box which supplements my Saorview TV. All the BBCs/ITVs/C4s/C5s and no messing about.

When I turned off my sky box, removed card, when I turned back on I had uk menu channels, I seemed to have bbc1/2 itv 1/2/3 plus a few other channels. Can I assume that this will continue when my subscription is cancelled.

After 2 days borrowing bro in laws Apple TV I'm defo getting that. He strongly recommended to me to check if I have unlimited broadband so that's my next job.
