Hey all, just looking for a bit of advise regarding a new CPU. I have an ASUS M4A79XTD Evo motherboard and a dying Phenom II X2 550. As the board is AM3 the best cpu I think I can get is the Phenom II 965. Just wondering would I be better off getting an AM3+ board and a different CPU. Or is the 965 good enough for light gaming and streaming movies and matches.

If you can get one on the cheap then the 965 is definitely still adequate for light gaming and more.

I'd try to grab one secon hand for ~50 quid or less.

The 965 will cost around 120 euro new, but don't know what the equivalent AM3+ board and CPU would come to.

Actually they are as low as 80 new online and go for around 50 euros second hand on ebay

Cheers for that, obviously looking in the wrong stores. Amazon is 90 sterling and Dabs was around 120 euro.

    Price search over Europe
http://geizhals.at/eu/amd-phenom-ii-x4-965-black-edition-125w-hdz965fbgmbox-a476201.html, if you translate you can see some ship to Ireland.

Used, 57 euros, no heatsink, but top-rated seller
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/PROCESADOR-AMD-PHENOM-965-X4-SOCKET-AM2-AM3-BLACK-EDITION-/360721921021?pt=ES_Inform%C3%A1tica_y_tablets&hash=item53fcb3b3fd

Otherwise I've seen the FX 6300 go as low as 80 sterling on Amazon (free postage), and could stretch to a new motherboard (43 sterling for this, again free shipping)

About 150 euros total depending on the exchange rate (actually just checked, comes to 156 euros to order right now)

Yah a 6300 and new board is probably your best bet. Great processor with good overclocking potential and 6 threads. It should last a long time.
