    Hi All,

The other day i put 40 quid of petrol into my car which preety much filled it.

The gauge is now down to just under 1/4 full and i have done 166 miles since i filled it. How is this right?

    its a 1.2 8v. Been driving on B roads.

    What is wrong with it?

    Thanks.

Sounds like the inverter flow to the flux capacitor.

How many litres did you put in and how many are in it now?
There's only one accurate way to work out mpg and that's fill it to the click, drive a decent milage (100 or so miles) and fill it once again to the click.

Also fuel gauges aren't very accurate.

When was the last time you had it serviced?

If you're saying that all the fuel you bought this morning was consumed in the 166 miles then it's working out at about 30 MPG assuming a cost of €1.60 per litre.

You'll have to make a judgement yourself if the type of roads and style of driving makes 30 MPG reasonable or not.

was last serviced end of last year.

46 litres full, there is around 10 litres in it now.

~36 litres to drive 166 miles, 4.6 mpg? am i right at that?

36 litres is almost 8 gallons.

    20 mpg
    Something definitely up.
Where were you doing most of the driving.
How much miles have you done since last service?

    About 20mpg ish.

well half a tank is roughly 20 litres, its at a quarter tank now, so ~ 10 litres.

Done around 8000 miles since it was last serviced. It has always been bad MPG but that was the worst i have seen.

been driving on B roads, 50mph roads.

    €40.00 @ €1.60 per litre = 25 litres

    25 litres @ 4.54 litres per gallon = 5.5 gallons.

    166 miles / 5.5 gallons = 30.2 MPG

What sort of car is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 274 ✭✭Jordan537

im currently in Isle of man so its 1.42 a litre (sterling) works roughly about 1.67 euro per litre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,423 ✭✭✭Avns1s

Well you mentioned "the other day" which suggests a couple of cold starts and that, together with the type of roads etc., would seem not too bad consumption for what is an underpowered car anyway.

Why don't you do a proper test? i.e. Fill to the brim, note mileage, fill to the brim again and note new mileage and litres used and use that to get a proper figure for your MPG. Then come back and discuss it in the context of the actual roads, driving, etc.

i dont care what kind of driving or roads it has had over last few days, 166 miles for 3/4 tank is ridiculous.

The Isle of Man, with no speed limits? How much high rev driving were you actually doing? ;)

the isle of man does have speed limits, alot of the roads are 50mph.

there is a few sections where the national speed limit applies which is unlimited on the isle of man.

the mountain road has no speed limit.

i do push the car hard, but its a 1.2... what would you expect... it barely goes.

I used to have a polo. Pushing it hard, I'd be lucky to see 30mpg.
Normal driving, I'd be lucky to get 35 mpg.

But this is a factor in the fuel usage.
So stop start traffic will effect how far you go on a tank, just like low gear high revving driving.
So 166 miles could be reasonable with some heavy runs on tight mountain roads.

Fill the car up to the brim again and do a new calculation. Then drive about 250 km and fill it up again. You'll get a better idea that way.

I had a Citroen Picasso on loan with an electronic fuel gauge and it was desperately unreliable, turns out it was an economical enough car though.

But sure you've already been told in post #3 that fuel gauges aren't accurate. Zero the trip counter, brim the tank, drive until it's low, brim again and use the distance covered and the amount it took in litres to calculate your fuel consumption.

What is it with people talking about putting euros into their tank? Does the car run on copper and nickel?

Might as well say I put 2 metres worth of petrol into my car

Why not come back when you state how many litres went in, it's not that f*cking hard to remember

You were obviously sold diet petrol

Less carbs = less energy = less mpg

    Its like, science and stuff.

So "quid" in this case is pounds, not euros?

Tbh the only way to know for sure is to use the brimming method for two full tanks and calculate the usage that way.
What you're doing now is wild guesses and no-one can say for sure what, or indeed if, something is wrong with your car.

    Go to the petrol station.
    There fill car to top.
Reset mileage counter to 0 (or note down current mileage).
Drive as normal until car is almost empty.
Go back to petrol station and fill car up to top again.
Make note of how many litres it took to replenish car.
Take note of how many miles you travelled.
Use an online calculator like this http://www.calculate-mpg.co.uk/index.php?intro=known and fill out litres and miles. It will tell you the MPG.

Did OP say what car it was? If not I'm betting on the 1.2 VAG 3-pot in a Polo, Fabia etc

I'm guessing the same Corsa 1.2 8v as before

    Im guessing Fiat Punto 1.2

Also, OP if you havent noticed, youre getting a lot of "smart" replies because youre getting into a Huff at your cars consumption without any measurable / quantifiable figures or facts.

Whats even more laughable is that you thought you could divide 166 miles by 36 LITRES to get 4.6 miles per GALLON.

Do yourself a favour and start over again by actually completely filling your tank, taking note of Litres that went into tank, reset trip to 0, drive till nearly empty, fill up completely again and calculate your consumption PROPERLY using distance traveled and litres used!

do you know that your car possibly have 3rd gear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,903 ✭✭✭cadaliac

Rental car - could need a cat, or coil pack for that matter. Either will have a big effect.
Either way, re-do the calculations. 30 odd mpg isn't really that bad when horsing aroung a 1.2 rental.

Funny, F1 uses kg of fuel because litres is totally irrelevant and changes depending on the temp so is too inaccurate to use.
Op, you should weigh your car before and after and get hold of some expansion / temperature graphs for petrol, it's the only way to be sure.

I was waiting to see if anyone would point that out ;)

€40 of F1 fuel woudn't go very far :pac:
