    Hi

Can any of you good people recommend a good independent BMW mechanic ? I've a brake problem on an 2009 three series at the moment that the dealers are quoting mad money to fix. I'd love to get a really good indy to look at it though and save some cash..

Is it anything particularly involved - ie that only a BMW specialist, rather than a good general mechanic, could sort out? Also, whereabouts in Dublin are you?

try Valdas, see below link. He is highly regarded. What exactly is the issue? Gary in chelmsford motors, bloomfield or scullys in clontarf...

I can give you a link to a dirt cheap very good mechanic I use, depends on what the problem is though, as per the above quote. I take it if its mad money, even by bmw standards, its more than worn disks or pads and sensors?

Thanks guys - ABS, DSC, and Yellow Brake light are on which I'm told means a replacement ABS module is needed.

I've seen sites in the UK that rebuild the modules, hence the request for a local BMW indy - to establish (a) if this is in fact the problem and (b) the cost of fixing with perhaps a rebuilt part..

    Thanks

Chap out in straffan in Kildare (25-30 mins) from city centre called mark Allen.

Highly recommended by a lot of bmw enthusiasts.

right, Id go with Valdas. I take it they have reset it and it has come back on? I had this light come up once a few weeks ago and shortly after, it went off and stayed off...

There should be a rather nice collection of classics out there as well.

Did anybody read the fault codes on the car? Most decent indy garages will have diagnostic software that should be able to scan and read the fault codes. This will point towards where the problem is, it could well only be an ABS sensor that is knackered rather than the module itself.

Were the pads changed recently by any chance? The wear sensors need to be changed at the same time as the pads too otherwise it can through up errors. I've also seen a battery on it's way out light up the dashboard like a Christmas tree too.

First port of call should be a diagnostic though.

Sounds like a speed sensor to me...the whole module could be faulty alright. Only a good diagnostic will tell you that for sure.
I think you have enough names to play with :-)

Isn't Bloomfield the two guys who used to run AC? If so, a rear caliper came adrift on a friend's E46 after they'd replaced the pads, necessitating recovery on a low loader from the quays. I wouldn't.

BBA in the UK do it, theyll test and send back your unit for £35 , could be cheaper than a diagnostic from a garage, handy enough to remove yourself too.

Is Dave Breach still working in Walkinstown? A miracle worker on the BM's.

I had this same fault 2 months ago fixed by my indy for 350euro. The fault came from the abs module and is a common fault which bmw used to change the complete abs module for but now they released a fix which contains the actual pressure sensors that fail on the abs module I think.

If your having the same fault the you will not have abs brakes also so be careful.
