Lack of tiles around shower valves

    Hi there,

The shower in my spare bathroom is in pretty dire condition (it came this way when I got it and so I've never really used it much) and I'm a bit concerned at the lack of tiles covering the shower valves in particular.

The attached picture gives you an idea.

I think whoever cut the tiles originally cut them too small for the surface area required and so filled in the gap with plaster or some other substance. I sense if I pushed very hard against the brown area around the valves, it would not take a whole lot of effort to break through it. I'm not an expert but I imagine if the shower was used regularly, it would probably cause deeper damage to the wooden wall behind the tiles.

Any ideas on how to fix this short of re-tiling the entire wall? Even to cover the untiled section so the shower could still be used occassionally?

I intend to re-do the whole bathroom eventually but it would be nice to have the ability to use the facility sometimes.

Thanks for any replies in advance.
