Just bought a 04 320d, no tax up on it at the min....

Can I tax it whilst waiting for the logbook? Is there a form I can fill out in the tax office or something?

Edit: or is there a few 'days grace' period?

Try requesting a PIN retrieval on www.motortax.ie.

You can tax it as long as the car is in your name.

No you wouldn't be entitled to grace although they may let you off if you can show that you just bought it.

Yeah I just got off the phone with the tax office and they said the exact same...

Its a bit stupid really that you dont get a few days grace until the car is in your name... thats what they said in the tax office, try at the end of the week and once the logbook has been processed on the system I can tax it.

So now I have to the risk for at least a week, at the very least a week id say... stupid system, there should be cover there for this sort of thing as it happens all the time.

Be careful where you park as you can attract tickets from garda and traffic wardens for non display of current tax disc

This worked for me last year...at some point, the car will be in your name before you actually get the logbook. Maybe wait a week or so and try again :)

Except that if there was a formal grace period, it would get abused left right and centre so officially there isn't one. For example, what's to stop you buying a car from a friend or family member with an expired tax disc, driving for several months and not submitting the change of ownership until you're stopped by the cops at which stage you can say you bought it yesterday and then you send off the paperwork?

As previous posters have said, bring evidence of the purchase in case you are stopped at a Garda checkpoint (difficult if it was a private sale I know) and do not park it on a public street or you risk getting a parking ticket.

You're also required to display a tax disc when you park in a 'public place' which these days includes shopping centres and car parks but there's very little risk of getting a ticket from a traffic warden or Garda on private property so just don't park on the street until you get a tax disc.

But sure every system in this country is open to abuse! Dont want to get into a debate about the rights and wrongs of the country but to day it would be open to abuse is not a valid reason to not have a plan in place for this commonplace occurance....

What evidence of purchase? I bought for cash...

But u have no choice but to park on a public road, this is my point. I need to drive to work, dropping off a small child and hoping for parking outside a busy hospital that does not provide ANY parking for employees!!!!!!

All of this for 12.5 hour shifts, before 8am 6 days a week.....

I HAVE to take the risk, ive no choice

You will only be able to tax it online once it is inputed in to the system in Shannon as change of owner. The vehicle cert will arrive by post couple days later after it has processed.

You cant back tax on line and you wouldn't want to either as tax would be posted to old address of previous owner.

The quickest way to have tax disc in your hand is wait for vehicle cert to arrive by post and physical go into tax office. If that is not possible or very inconvenient then tax online print the online receipt and keep it in car while your waiting on disc to arrive by post.

Yeah those appear to be my only viable options.... which really is a pity....

Yes the system could be abused but what about people like me who pay car tax regularly and WANT to pay car tax immediately on this so I dont have to take any risks.....

Its just not fair there is no contingency in place foe this considering how often it occurs....

But on the other hand, this is Ireland and it will probably be fixed in about 20 years.....

The older system gave you a receipt of sorts where you filled in a form and kept the bottom part that you could use as proof of change of ownership while waiting on log book to be sent out.

But we have the dumbest civil servants and goverment with total contempt for the public. But thats for another day

You would think that a online system could be fully automated and process instantly.

I personally wouldn't worry too much as the garda are fully aware how it works and will accept insurance policy start date as some sort of proof. tickets you can write in and show proof of change of owner later.
Its really a hassle more than anything else.
