Retainer Issues

    Hi all,
I've been wearing an essix retainer mainly at night time for the past 3 and half years however I've had to replace them a few times due to breakages and my dog having a chew on one :/ and now I'm after misplacing another one!
Essix retainer seems to be a bad option for someone as careless and forgetful as me, so my question is, is it possible to just get a permanent retainer fitted, or are some retainers more suitable than others? Also I'm just wondering how the fitting + maintenance of a permanent retainer would compare cost wise to wearing an essix retainer, bearing in mind that I'm quite unlucky with them!
    Thanks :)

    Ask your orthodontist.

It depends on the person! I can't get a permanent retainer because of the way my teeth are. They are probably about the same price.

    Hate the Essix one too..

Not all people are suitable for bonded retainers. Depends on the bite. Also a bonded retainer does not stop some forms of tooth relapse movements. As above only your orthodontist can give you the answer to this one.

A removable retainer is normally also required if a fixed/bonded retainer is used. A fixed retainer has significant maintenance requirements including extra hygiene visits and ortho checks as they have a high tendency for partial debonding which you may not notice until the teeth move.

The average lifespan of a fixed retainer is two years so they certainly aren't "permanent".

There are alternative removable retainers such as Hawley or Begg retainers and these are more durable but will cost more initially.

This. I have a bonded retainer on my lower incisors and also have to wear a removable retainer a couple of times a week.

It makes flossing a lot more difficult imo, so I have to keep an eye on it and make sure I'm not getting a build up of tartar.
