Completely not motivated for my exams

Hi I had to receive an I-grade for 5 university exams which I will be sitting next Monday 26th. I am completely unmotivated and I don't know why because I honestly love my course. I have a lot of learning to do because I was sick through most of the semester but I really have no motivation and I'm so upset about this yet I just can't do it.

Every time I set goals, I go about 1/4 way and then give up because inside my head I rationalise that it'll be okay even though I know it won't be. I've tried to stop this but I can't seem to. I know my exams are extremely close but I just need the motivation because I really want to go back to uni after them.

    I don't know what's wrong with me.

...I rationalise that it'll be okay even though I know it won't be...

What type of arguments do you use to rationalize (to yourself) that ''it'll be okay''?

Im in same boat, resitting two on 26th and 27th. You need to just be going over and over exam questions. You might not get everything done but if you do 30 minute chunks and take breaks. I had intended to do 6 hours today i'll end up doing about 4.

    Cut down all the info

    do exam questions

take breaks, if an hour is all you can do its honestly better than nothing.

    Good luck

Right now you can start -you have a week. Focus on 3 subjects per day and do 2 hours per subject, per day. The 2 hour thing is REALLY important. 2 hours of a subject a day is do-able. Waking up thinking you've to do an entire day of something is daunting and offputting!

What you need to do this minute is make a list of what has to be covered for each subject - high level - an example from one subject during my degree might have been - matrix stiffness method, virtual work, dynamics, influence lines & arches.

Each of those topics gets a 2 hour slot assigned to it. That's it. So you MUST figure out ahead of those 2 hours (as in, now) what has to be covered in those 2 hours. A bullet point list where everything within that topic is detailed.

In those two hours cover SOMETHING from each of those bullet points. Have SOMETHING you can say about it. Be able to repeat at least ONE hard example done in class if it's that type of subject (preferably understand it, but being able to repeat it will do)

From tomorrow your routine is this:

    Breakfast.

2 hours of subject 1 (tea break halfway through for 15 minutes)

    Lunch (45 minutes)

    2 hours of subject 2

    30 minute break

    2 hours of subject 3

    Downtime

    Dinner (1 hour)

    Make a cup of tea

Gather up everything you did during the day

Read through it (neither too in-depth nor too-skim, something in between)

On 1 sheet, summarize everything you did for subject 1.
    Repeat for subjects 2 & 3.

9pm-9:30pm - stop. Have a shower, relax, get an early night and up again early in the morning.

Take notes of the time you're working on stuff - start time for subject - any breaks you take for the loo or your tea break in the middle - log the start and end time of the break. Be very fussy about making sure you do the two hours. When the two hours is up, move on.

Cup of chamomile tea tonight will help you sleep tonight. Go for a shower in around 9ish, get into bed with chamomile tea and a book (not college related) of your choice and read until you're sleepy. Light out at 11 latest, alarm set for 0730.

Turn off the computers and TV and technology when you go to shower and don't turn them back on. You can do this.

It can be so daunting thinking about studying for 5 subjects so I understand the lack of motivation. The best advise I could give you would be to really schedule out each hour - it really helps to focus the mind on what you're doing at that moment in time and stops you wandering off thinking about other things.

Taking breaks in between studying is so important too and getting some fresh air will clear your mind. Also, giving yourself something to look forward to when you finish for the day.

    Good luck!!

The usual: "I'll do it tomorrow", "if I work really hard from tomorrow onwards ill get it all done".

Thanks to everyone else for all your help. Especially the day plan, ill definitely try that. Getting away from technology is really hard for me! Also good luck to the other poster facing exams.
