I need a job done to my car so over the last few days i sussed out a few mechanics.the job is half days work and a few said they charge 200 quid labour for half day work

I thought that was steep as that equates to over 90k a year..which obviously is a very good salary.i know more than likely they wont have constant work but thoses prices sounded crazy.

    Am i wrong

Yes as you are equating it to pure labour, are there any parts involved?

Your not counting their overheads, light heat & rent plus tax and public liability insurance. It's not take home pay.

So if you thought he was on say 40k you should only pay him about a ton for a half days work?

Your paying him for a skill you don't have , if you think it's expensive rent a garage buy a full pro tool kit and do it yourself.

I agree. Those prices sound nuts!

I'll do that job for a tenner, but I have to warn you, I'm not a mechanic, and I can't guarantee the work.

€50-€60 an hour for labour wouldn't be unusual for a decent indy mechanic to charge

    100% of reputable ones.

Light & heat are overheads, what's the problem?

Yes, you're forgetting the cost of rent, insurance, tools/equipment, training, electricity, etc. Not trying to be funny, but if you think it's expensive, you could but all the gear to do it yourself. Obviously there will be cases where €200 is excessive, but it depends on the job, and the garage will charge a standard labour rate rather than trying to justify specific cost to each and every customer.

The mechanic is only getting a small fraction of that €200.

Another factor to consider OP, is that a properly set up and experienced mechanic, especially if he has a load of work lined up, is going to get the work done a lot quicker.

    Quicker work = cheaper work.

Half days work is 4 hours, ish. That's €50 an hour, ex parts. Main dealers charge from €75 an hour up to €175 an hour. Boay, you're gettin a bargin..

yeah, mechanics know how to charge. I'm pouring a base and buying a lift this week. It's cheaper than 1 weeks mechanics bills...

That's a beast of a job, €200 is cheap for the labour on that.

Most mechanics have a place to work in eg a garage, most would be sensible enough to have insurance, bit difficult to work as a mechanic without electricity....

First of all, you Sir are the Man. There may well be a fair bit of time to remove the old part and fit the new. Normally we use Autodata to give us an idea of how long a job might take. Many pros use that to calculate labour times.

I have a great mechanic. He does a fantastic job keeping my 14yr old Audi NCT legal and always apologises when presenting me with a reasonable bill. There are good guys out there in every profession. The trick is finding them

Had to get front and rear brakes done recently and was quoted 350 euro parts and labour.
Nearly fell over when I heard the cost.
Went home wondering how the fcuk id gather that kind of money together.
With few options I looked up how to replace brake pads on youtube.Bought front and rear pads in local motor factors for 70 quid, had them fitted in an hour and a half.:)

I always thought that wasn't such a big job on VWs?

PS I'd consider that rate very cheap for any mechanic with suitable credentials that I'd let near my R32! Are you getting a receipt?

Got to be careful - numerous mechanics are really dodgy, falsifying issues with the car so the clueless car owner would pay more.

Oh, uh-oh, wait a minute. These tires won't take a balance!
    You hear that clunk?
Well, that tells me you need four new tires.

OP - get a second quote. And a third. Then you'll know if it's a ripoff or not.

Happens with any serviced product really - a few years back I had my PC sent to a repair shop, to be given back to me with a different GFX card... they replaced an expensive one for a cheap one.

Yeah, like I wouldn't notice that when I saw a serious drop in fps while gaming... they tried to deny, but I had photo proof of before and after [being well aware of this practice], and with that they promptly replaced the card with a new one of what I had if I didn't file a report to the police.

Try a BMW main dealer - charges of close to €200 an hour. Seriously how can you justify that?

It was €200 for half a days work; was it not?

That then would be €50 p/h.
